General Summary Of Position

The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) invites applications for two full-time, open-rank, tenure-track/tenured faculty positions beginning in September 2026. One position is in Nuclear Engineering and the other in Physics and Applied Physics, reflecting a coordinated hire spanning the Francis College of Engineering (FCOE) and the Kennedy College of Sciences (KCS). This joint search is designed to strengthen cross-college collaboration in advanced nuclear energy, fusion, and related emerging technologies.

We seek collaborative scholars whose work advances nuclear engineering, nuclear science, fission and fusion energy systems, or related emerging fields.

Priority areas include AI/ML method development for multiphysics modeling and simulation; the nuclear fuel cycle; reactor safety; advanced sensing, diagnostics, and measurement systems; nuclear medicine; radiation health physics; nuclear fission and fusion materials; and plasma and fusion physics. Candidates whose research involves experimental studies or leverages UMass Lowell’s Radiation Laboratory—including its 1-MW research reactor, 5.5-MV Van de Graaff accelerator, and radiochemistry facilities—or who integrate AI/ML or quantum computing into their research are strongly encouraged to apply.

A strong commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels within the Nuclear Engineering and/or Physics curricula is essential. The role also includes contributing to interdisciplinary teaching at the intersection of science and engineering to help grow technical electives and strengthen the broader nuclear science and engineering curriculum while supporting core departmental needs. Candidates who can support offerings connected to Chemical Engineering, Radiological Sciences and Medical Physics, or related fields are especially encouraged to apply.

Position 1: Nuclear Engineering (Department of Chemical Engineering)

This position supports the continued expansion of the ABET-accredited Nuclear Engineering and Chemical Engineering programs through research and instruction in areas aligned with advanced nuclear and fusion technologies. Areas of alignment include reactor safety—especially criticality safety and nuclear thermal-hydraulics—fuel cycle science, and behavior of materials under extreme irradiation, along with instrumentation, controls, or AI-enhanced computational methods. The role includes contributing to interdisciplinary offerings that complement the broader nuclear science and engineering curriculum. The successful candidate will participate in undergraduate and graduate instruction and collaborate with colleagues across engineering and the physical sciences.

Position 2: Physics and Applied Physics (Department of Physics and Applied Physics)

This position advances the department’s programs in nuclear science and supports research and teaching across applied physics, radiological sciences, and medical physics. Areas of alignment include experimental programs in neutron and gamma-ray measurement science, radiation detection, nuclear data and benchmarking, radiochemistry, health physics (ABET-accredited), and materials under irradiation, with related computational or theoretical efforts also considered; interests supporting the CAMPEP-accredited medical physics program are welcome. The role includes contributing to interdisciplinary coursework that strengthens nuclear science and engineering pathways. The successful candidate will teach within the physics program and engage in collaborative, multidisciplinary research efforts.

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

  • A PhD or equivalent degree in nuclear engineering, physics, medical physics, radiological sciences, or a closely related field.
  • A strong record of research and demonstrated teaching potential.
  • Interest in developing interdisciplinary collaborations across engineering, physics, and applied sciences.

Special Instructions To Applicants

These positions are full-time, benefited and in the Massachusetts Society of Professors/MTA/NEA union. Anticipated salary range per their Collective Bargaining Agreement lists a minimum of $75,000 for Assistant Professor, with Associate Professor minimum $85,000 and Professor $100,000. Anticipated maximum salary based on Professor rank, qualifications and department anticipated not to exceed $233,000.

Review of applications will begin immediately, and continue until the position is filled. However, the position may close when an adequate number of qualified applications is received.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Cover Letter (Please include in your cover letter the position you are applying for).
  • Teaching Statement/Philosophy
