Description

The new Clemson University Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position to help establish the new Clemson CVM Large Animal and Ambulatory Service. The primary responsibilities of this position are focused on clinical service, teaching, and research. Academic rank would be commensurate with experience. Wellness and faculty support are important to Clemson University; faculty benefits can be found here.Part of the mission of the Clemson CVM is to promote animal and human health in the state of SC through the education of the next generation of veterinary clinicians and scientists with an emphasis on large animals (including cattle, sheep, goats, and horses), general practice and population medicine. The position is designed for an individual committed to this mission by providing large animal clinical service, teaching, and research in both the clinical and pre-clinical curriculum of the developing Clemson DVM program. This individual will work with students, other faculty, staff, and large animal clients in local communities.

The service will have four fully equipped trucks based out of an ambulatory services building on the new Clemson CVM Campus, enabling faculty members to deliver an exceptional client and patient experience while educating students in this core student-led ambulatory service rotation. The ambulatory service building will maintain a full complement of diagnostic analyzers, and each fully equipped, state-of-the-art ambulatory truck will have a dedicated ultrasound and access to patient-side bloodwork analyzers, flexible endoscopy, mobile hoof trimming and squeeze chutes, and digital radiography.

Clinical skills laboratories with low and high-fidelity large animal simulation models and live animal teaching facilities on site at the Lamaster Dairy and Clemson Equine Unit will support additional educational experiences for clinical rotations. The clinical service will have referral relationships with several area referral hospitals, as a referral hospital facility is not currently planned for the Clemson CVM Campus. Clemson CVM specialists are available for case consultation in areas such as pathology, large animal internal medicine, preventive medicine, and equine surgery. Support from the Clemson University State Diagnostic Laboratory in Columbia, SC will help ambulatory clinicians engage with pathologists for clinical diagnostic needs. Clemson CVM faculty and staff experts in teaching and learning will help the successful candidate in developing curriculum for the ambulatory clinical rotation, providing student feedback, and assessing students. Department and faculty expertise will provide support for candidates who wish to complete an ABVP or ACPVM certificate.

Clinical assignments will include after-hours emergency duty, shared by the four full-time members of the ambulatory service team. Emergency case load will consist of mixed large animal/production species including equine. Phone consultation and in person support via Clemson faculty and colleagues for daytime and after-hours cases are available and encouraged to help successful applicants build comfort with multiple species. Individual and collaborative research is also encouraged, with mentorship and support available.

The first three years of the position will be focused on building the ambulatory practice. Engaging with extension agents across the state and developing relationships with local and regional producers and producer groups will enable the practice to accept fourth year Clemson veterinary students in 2029. Collaborations with Clemson Extension and Clemson School of Nursing-Rural Health will also be part of the planned relationship building, as engagement with regional producers and rural communities will enhance the educational experience for fourth year students. Fourth year students from regional veterinary schools will be accepted for elective rotations prior to 2029.

Species PercentagesAs this is a new clinical service, case load numbers have not yet been generated. Anderson County, where the CVM is located, leads the state in cattle and sheep numbers and ranks second in horse numbers. Nearby counties of Oconee, Laurens, Saluda, and Abbeville are also strong in animal agriculture sectors, particularly in cattle, small ruminants, horses, and poultry. The ambulatory service will support backyard poultry and swine operations only, with a likely focus on 4-H animals and individual or small herd care. One of the four ambulatory trucks is designated as a regional herd health truck, intended to seek out larger regional farms for herd health management educational experiences, working with local veterinarians and extension agents to promote producer efficiency, food quality, and food safety within the state of South Carolina.
