Job Summary
The University of Connecticut is seeking an RN Coordinator (Nurse Clinical Coordinator) for our Regional Campuses. This position will be the direct supervisor of the 5 RNs across the four regional campuses. The RN Nurse Navigator program will increase access to care by creating a nurse navigator model available for each regional campus. An RN nurse navigator model provides consultation with students to help them navigate the complex medical landscape, including insurance, transportation, referrals to specialty care, and access to community providers who understand their cultural and identity needs. Under the general supervision of the Director of Regional Campus Operations, coordinates the activities of health care services by applying nursing skills in the care and treatment of patients.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Coordinates services, staff, procedures, policies and patient flow; evaluates services, recommends policy or procedural changes; may train and evaluate professional and/or non-professional staff as needed.
  • Supervises patient care administered by a licensed registered nurse and may oversee non-professional staff.
  • Assesses health problems of incoming patients by means of interview and examination.
  • Interprets and reports observations, in keeping with sound nursing practices.
  • Administers patient care as prescribed by the physician and/or in conformance with medical and nursing protocols.
  • Evaluates and alters nursing care according to the needs of patients.
  • Manages the day-to-day nursing operations that support patient-focused advice and education, the maintenance and improvement of the health of students, and identifies and assists in removing or modifying health-related barriers.
  • Assists in the administration of examinations, tests and other procedures, when appropriate.
  • Interprets appropriate aspects of health management to the patient, including medical and nursing instructions and counsels patients about prevention, early detection, early intervention, and self-care.
  • Evaluates nursing services on each of the regional campuses and recommends policy or procedural changes.
  • Documents assessment findings, care measures, and the resulting patient response on appropriate forms according to approved methods.
  • Assesses patient need for emotional health care and makes proper referrals in cases beyond the scope of nursing expertise.
  • Gives necessary emergency treatment and referral to anyone injured on campus following established protocols.
  • Creates referral plans of care and relationships for medical care beyond the scope of Student Health and Wellness regional nursing services and arranges for necessary transportation.
  • Maintains drugs, medical supplies, and equipment as necessary.
  • Participates in and/or conducts in-service presentations.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the State of CT.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or another health-related field.
  • Four years of nursing experience working directly with adolescents/young adults in community health, ambulatory care, or a school-based nursing environment.
  • Demonstrable physical assessment nursing skills.
  • CPR certification.
  • Experience documenting clinical assessments and care, and communicating medical information, instructions, or referrals to patients, staff, and providers in both verbal and written form.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a clinical or healthcare setting, including patients, staff, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a culture of diversity, respect and inclusion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eight to ten years of nursing experience.
  • Five years of experience with direct supervision.
  • Experience leading a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Experience working in a college health setting.
  • Experience in Case Management.
  • Experience providing telephone advice.

APPOINTMENT TERMS
This position has an in-person physical presence on all four regional campuses on a regular basis to observe and support the regional nursing staff and may be based in one of these regional offices. Occasional travel to Storrs for trainings and meetings may be required. This position may also work weekends, holidays, or variable shifts on a rotating basis as needed. This is a full-time, in-person, permanent position.
