The Department of German and Italian at Smith College invites applications for a 3-year renewable, benefits-eligible position in German Studies to begin July 1, 2026, at the rank of Lecturer. This is a continuing, non-tenure track, teaching-focused faculty position with teaching as the primary responsibility. The position includes access to research funds and a track to promotion to Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will teach 5 courses per year at all levels of the curriculum, in German and in English, as well as actively contribute to department life and curricular development. Area of specialization is open, but interest in language acquisition is essential and experience in curricular design preferred. Candidates are expected to be fluent in German and English, and have a proven record of excellence in teaching German at the undergraduate level. Ph.D. or ABD status in German is required at time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in German Studies are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of German and Italian Studies, where they will teach and be creatively engaged in the department’s transnational approach. We welcome applications from scholars whose work expands beyond the canonical study of German culture and brings a variety of transversal, interdisciplinary and ethically-informed perspectives to the field.

In addition to a competitive benefits package, starting pay range for this position is typically between $75,800-$77,800. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications
