Position OverviewJayhawk Academic Advising (JAA) is a part of the Centers for Orientation and Academic Advising Programs, a unit reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Success. JAA provides comprehensive academic advising services for new and currently enrolled undergraduate students including prospective student application coaching in all undergraduate majors and selected graduate programs across the University. Our organization is staffed by professional advisors, support staff, graduate assistants and student assistants.
The student assistant (SA) supports those efforts through administrative duties and works closely with the Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, and other SAs. Front desk staff will interact with all members of JAA, including professional staff, graduate assistants, and student teams. The SA position requires working with offices and individuals throughout the University.

Availability to work weekdays from 7:45am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
Availability to work through both summer and fall semester. Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

- Works at the front desk of the JAA office (Summerfield Hall 315, Spahr Engineering Library 1310, 117 Stauffer-Flint) and oversees the reception area.
- Answers phone calls, responds to emails, and greets in-person visitors.
- Provides accurate information about our services and KU to students, parents, guests, faculty, and staff in a timely manner.
- Assists current students with scheduling academic advising appointments.
- Supports JAA through office organization, printing, copying, scanning, mail distribution, document creation, data entry, and other projects.
- Utilizes various technologies and software to accomplish job responsibilities.
- May be responsible for opening and/or closing the office.
- Must be an undergraduate student that has completed at least two semesters at KU.
- Must be enrolled at KU in at least 6 credit hours during the fall/spring.
- During summer, the student assistant must: have been enrolled in at least 6 hours in the past spring semester, or be enrolled in at least 6 hours for the upcoming fall semester, or be enrolled in the summer session.
- Must be in good academic standing with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
- Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
- Customer service experience as demonstrated by application materials.
- Campus involvement through student organizations, experiential learning, or leadership positions as demonstrated by application materials.
- Availability to work during the summer and academic school year, including Spring, Fall, & Winter Breaks (internships and study abroad can be exceptions during the academic year).
- Demonstrated KU knowledge: academic, extracurricular, procedural.
- Demonstrated experience using technology, including Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Ability to manage situations in a calm and professional manner.
- Open to sharing experience as a KU student with students, parents, and guests.
- Sensitivity to needs and concerns of students, parents, and guests.
