Position Summary

UCLA Environment, Health & Safety's mission is to encourage and promote a strong safety culture that practices sound health, safety, and environmental stewardship. This is accomplished through engaging and informing the UCLA Campus and Community by providing collaborative, proactive, and responsive safety and compliance expertise, through the various divisions within EH&S: Fire & Life Safety, Emergency Management, Research Safety, Information Technology, Administration, and Environmental, Occupations & Safety Programs.

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor, and close collaboration to the Campus Fire Marshal, the Hazardous Materials Specialist is responsible for promoting and ensuring fire and life safety through inspection, education and enforcement. The incumbent will assist with classification of hazardous chemicals and serve as a technical reference in enforcing the California Fire Code regulations pertaining to hazardous chemical use, storage and disposal. This position will perform plan review and inspection services in new and existing buildings related to hazardous materials and fire and life safety. The incumbent will also integrate building occupancy data into the campus Chemical Inventory System (CIS) in order to fully develop the tracking/reporting capabilities of that system.

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • 5 years In plan review, code enforcement and inspection of facilities containing hazardous materials. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated expertise and understanding with hazardous material utilized in a research environment. (Preferred)
  • Thorough knowledge/understanding of fire and life safety principles and familiarity with all EH&S fields. (Required)
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of: California Code of Regulations, Title 19, and Title 24, Parts 1-9; National Fire Codes (published by the National Fire Protection Association). (Required)
  • Advanced skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend campus policy. (Required)
  • Advanced skill to effectively represent the campus to state and federal authorities, and community groups. (Preferred)
  • Experience responding to or handling hazardous materials emergencies. (Required)
  • Experience as a Federal, State or local agency fire or hazardous materials inspector. (Required)
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices in laboratories conducting biology, chemistry, physics, nanotechnologies, microelectronic researches, etc. to ensure proper handling and storage of hazardous materials (Required)
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials utilized in a research environment (Required)
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials management, including its scientific background, technology, principles, methods, investigative techniques and problems. (Required)
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment. (Required)
  • Skills to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment. (Required)
  • Advanced skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend campus policy. (Preferred)
  • Advanced skill to effectively represent the campus to state and federal authorities, and community groups. (Preferred)
  • Must be able to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Will wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus as required to perform inspections and investigations. (Required)
  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Toxicology or other approved related field (Required) Or
  • Master's Degree Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Toxicology (Preferred)
  • Registered professional engineers or Certified Industrial Hygienists. (Preferred)
  • Must successfully complete the California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 2B course and the Statutes and Regulations. Within 12 months of hire (Required)
  • Must obtain 40-hour Hazwoper certification Within 12 months of hire (Required)
  • Will be required to obtain and maintain any other licenses(s) and or certification(s) that may be required by future regulation by Federal, State, local and/or industry requirements (Required)

Special Conditions for Employment

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • Color Vision Testing
  • Must be able to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. (Required)
  • Will wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus as required to perform inspections and investigations. (Required)
  • Participate in required preventative medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc. (Required)
  • Work flexible hours that include days, nights, weekends and holidays. (Required)
  • Occasionally, work unscheduled overtime. (Required)
