About The College/Unit/Department

The Department of Communication Studies has 21 full-time and three part-time faculty members, who are nationally recognized authorities in rhetorical studies, interpersonal communication, intergroup communication, persuasion, and health communication. Our faculty are committed to maintaining high standards in both undergraduate and graduate instruction. The department maintains a PhD program with approximately 40 graduate students and an undergraduate program with approximately 350 majors.

Position Summary

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full-time, Full Professor position in Health Communication with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. Candidates who are advanced Associate Professors with potential for promotion to Full Professor upon hire will be considered.

The responsibilities of this position are to carry out research; to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in research methods, communication theory, and the successful candidate’s area of scholarly expertise; to supervise graduate and undergraduate; and to perform service to the department and university. The successful candidate should be committed to multidisciplinary collaboration across a comprehensive university and ideally envision possibilities for collaborations that emerge as part of UGA’s School of Medicine and the planned School of Nursing. Ideal candidates also will be enthusiastic about contributing to curricular innovation focused on Health Communication or Communication Studies more broadly.

Candidates considered for the Full Professor rank must have qualifications and academic credentials that are commensurate with the promotion and tenure guidelines at the University of Georgia and must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire. The successful candidate will be an accomplished social scientist, with internationally recognized expertise in Health Communication as well as a well-developed and active program of research that complements the strengths of the department’s faculty. Ideal candidates will have a strong record of securing external funding.
