Description

The Mathematics Department at The University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, seeks exceptional candidates to fill a Full/Associate/Assistant (i.e., open-ranked) Professor position, depending on the candidates’ qualifications, in the area of Industrial, Computational, and Applied Mathematics (especially differential equations, statistics, computational mathematics, data science, mathematical biology, and scientific computing) starting August 1, 2026. Prior experience with an industrial mathematics educational program and related industrial collaborations is preferred (see below for the detailed requirements). The successful candidate is expected to lead the development of the department’s new Industrial Mathematics Master's Program.

In recent years, the Department of Mathematics has steadily increased its research prominence, graduate student training diversification, and teaching excellence both within the University and in the larger mathematical community. The faculty is highly active, and their research has been supported by external funding agencies and industry. Opportunities exist to collaborate with researchers in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the UT-Oak Ridge Innovative Institute, the premier NSF-supported Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (CAMM), and the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS).

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is the flagship university in the Tennessee state higher education system. Starting salaries for TT/T faculty in the Mathematics Department are very competitive. The state of Tennessee is in strong fiscal condition, and the University has provided salary increases for the past ten consecutive years.

Knoxville is a vibrant and diverse medium-sized city next to the Tennessee River and Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee, with Nashville, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Atlanta all within an approximate 3-hour radius. Knoxville has ample opportunities for shopping, numerous cultural attractions, a relatively low cost of living, and is in close proximity to both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and over 650,000 acres of national forest.

The University is beginning a next-level initiative aimed both at substantially elevating the University's national reputation for impactful research, scholarship, and creative activity and at assembling a roster of faculty committed to delivering one of the nation's best educational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.
