Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit:

UNC Greensboro University Libraries invites applications for the position of Collections Strategist Librarian. Reporting to the Head, Technical Services, the Collections Strategist Librarian has Libraries-wide responsibility for building and managing the Libraries’ collections. The Collections Strategist coordinates strategic collection building with innovative management of existing content to embrace new models in scholarly publishing and communication to ensure that the collections meet the university’s teaching, learning, and research missions.

Position Summary:

This position will manage central collection development funds (annual budget $3.5 million) under the direction of the Head, Technical Services; Administer the selection and renewal of e-resources and additional collections resources in consultation with the Collection Management Team and individual Library Liaisons; Craft and implement strategies for collection development, budget planning, and management; Lead and manage resource access activities including licensing review and negotiation and facilitating access to licensed content; Collect and analyze cost, usage, and other relevant data to ensure that the collections budget is being spent as efficiently as possible.

This position will participate in evaluating vendor offers; Prepare and present information to appropriate library groups to help inform collections decisions; participate in vendor negotiations; Serve as the primary contact for collection assessment activities that may include program reviews, accreditation reports, and internal assessments; Provide leadership for collections space planning; Incorporate data-driven and user-focused assessment methodologies to analyze the Libraries’ current collection management program; Design interpretive reports and data visualizations to best present and communicate how the Libraries judiciously develop its collections in an environment of change in scholarly communications and publishing; Encourage a culture of innovation, collaboration, and shared stewardship responsibilities that serve the university’s needs and the Libraries’ strategic goals. This position will also supervise one librarian and one support staff member.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited master’s degree, or comparable graduate degree.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in building and managing library collections in physical and digital formats, including management of funds.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful implementation of data-informed strategies.
  • Experience working with library consortia.
  • Demonstrated evidence of success working independently, as well as collaboratively, in planning, coordinating, and implementing effective projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and align collection strategy with local priorities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of collections issues, emerging practices, standards, and trends relating to collection development and management in an academic library environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in reading, interpreting, and negotiating license agreements.
  • Evidence of successful and creative management of staff and operations.

Essential Tasks:

  • Manage central collection development funds (annual budget $3.5 million) and intermittent one-time funding (up to $1 million annually) under the direction of the Head, Technical Services.
  • Administer the selection and renewal of electronic resources and additional collections resources, making decisions informed by user needs, institutional priorities, and trends in scholarly communication and in consultation with the Collection Management Team.
  • Craft and implement strategies for collection development, budget planning, and management.
  • Lead and manage resource access activities including evaluating vendor offers, licensing review and negotiation, and facilitating access to licensed content.
  • Pilot and assess new collection development approaches using knowledge of the scholarly publishing landscape and emerging trends in publisher agreements, including open access resources.
  • Engage in and support consortial partnerships.

  • Communicate with subject librarians about collections decisions and policies to support their work with faculty.
  • Serve on the Collection Management Team.
  • Provide leadership for collections space planning in the library for physical resources.
  • Responsible for direct supervision, hiring, training and evaluation of one full-time librarian and one support staff member.
