Position OverviewSchool of Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Fellows (UGTFs) at the University of Kansas will support faculty instructors with active student engagement in undergraduate engineering courses. Undergraduate Teaching Fellows will guide student learning by interacting with students in remote and/or in-person format(s) as students work through problem sets or other activities. Unlike Teaching Assistants and Graders, this position does not involve grading assignments or maintaining typical office hours, however, time outside the regular class periods will be required to meet with the instructor and possibly to facilitate help sessions. The School of Engineering is looking for applicants to fill a number of core courses in each of the engineering disciplines.

Job Description

65%- Student Learning Support

  • Enhance student learning by actively engaging with students during class sessions, providing guidance and support to help them achieve mastery of key concepts.

35%- Faculty Assistance in Classroom Activities

  • Assist faculty in facilitating classroom activities such as group work, collaborative problem-solving, and other interactive exercises that promote student learning and engagement in core engineering courses.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have taken the specified course or an equivalent class and earned at least a ‘B’ in the course, as indicated in application materials.
  • Strong written communication and interpersonal skills, as indicated in application materials.
  • The job requires physical or virtual presence in the course (approx. 3 hours/week for a 3-credit course) and may demand approx. 2 hours/week outside of the class.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching/Tutoring experience at a university/college setting, as indicated in application materials.

Earned an ‘A’ in course, as indicated in application materials. Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

  • This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.Additional Candidate InstructionsCandidate’s application packet should contain online application, one page cover letter explicitly identifying the course number and title and summarizing the candidate’s experiences in teaching or tutoring fellow students and a one page resume. It is acceptable to identify multiple courses, however, candidates will only be selected for a single course. Candidates are strongly encouraged to talk with the instructor of the course to better understand the specific course duties and to discuss requirements for in-person class presence.
