Job Summary

The Bike Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing bicycles, including motorized bikes and scooters brought in for service. This hands-on role ensures optimal equipment performance, safety, and longevity through routine maintenance, component replacement, and repair services. The bike mechanic delivers high-quality service to GT Recreation members and collaborates with staff to support the bike shop's daily operations and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -

Conduct routine inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on bicycles, including motorized bikes and scooters.

Job Duty 2 -

Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical issues, following manufacturer guidelines and industry best practices.

Job Duty 3 -

Provide guidance and oversight to student bike technicians; offer training and support as needed.

Job Duty 4 -

Implement preventative maintenance programs and conduct final inspections to minimize downtime and ensure quality.

Job Duty 5 -

Maintain accurate service records, work orders, inventory logs, and manage parts, tools, and supplies using the institute's tracking systems.

Job Duty 6 -

Ensure all maintenance, repair activities, and bike shop operations comply with campus safety regulations, institute policies, and risk management protocols.

Job Duty 7 -

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe bike shop environment, and deliver workshops and educational sessions on bike repair, maintenance, and safety to the campus community.

Job Duty 8 -

Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma, GED, or Vocational School Diploma. Vocational training from a recognized bike mechanic training program (e.g., United Bicycle Institute (UBI), Barnett, etc.).

Required Experience

One or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience

Two more years of experience working in a collegiate or nonprofit outdoor program, bike shop, or similar setting.

Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to maintain an up-to-date operational manual
  • Ability to lift and maneuver bikes and parts as needed
  • Ability to stand and work on bikes for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work independently and manage shop operations with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work with, train, and supervise student employees, delegate tasks, and foster a learning

environment

KNOWLEDGE

  • Familiarity with POS systems and inventory management
  • Strong knowledge of bike repair, fitting, component compatibility, and safety standards

Skills

  • Proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Time management skills to balance multiple repairs and maintain workflow efficiency
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills - able to communicate with customers to

explain repairs, etc., and ensure customer satisfaction
