The Gould Center for Conflict Resolution at Stanford Law School is a nationally recognized program for teaching and research on conflict resolution. The Center seeks to hire an Associate Director to help lead expansion of the Center’s skills curriculum as well as co-curricular and community programming in concert with ePluribus Stanford, a university-wide initiative to support critical inquiry, constructive dialogue, and civic engagement.

The Associate Director will work closely with and report to the Director of the Gould Center and the law school’s Co-Director of ePluribus Stanford.

Due to the nature of the position involving substantial student/staff-facing work, this position will have a strong on-campus presence.Fully remote work is not an option for this role.

Principal Areas Of Responsibility Include

  • Develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses on conflict resolution in theory and practice, with a specific focus on cultivating the skills that support effective communication in disagreement and across difference in beliefs, values, interests, experience, and viewpoint.
  • Develop programming for ePluribus Stanford. Develop surveys for programming, solicit feedback for improved service.
  • Provide other classroom instruction, workshops, and training sessions; assist faculty members teaching conflict resolution courses (including co-teaching, coaching, and roleplaying where appropriate).
  • Lead and implement constructive dialogue and conflict resolution skills workshops and other programming within a deliberate practice model for students, staff, and faculty across the university.
  • Assist in creation, coordination and development of research and dissemination of knowledge production on best practices in conflict resolution theory and skills, including expert speaker events, symposia, and other activities of the Center and ePluribus.
  • Outreach to various stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, and administration) within the program.
  • Implement changes to improve quality and services of the program. Identify and determine causes of problems; develop and present recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
  • Maximize productivity through use of appropriate deployment of technology and other tools, planned training and performance initiatives.
  • Represent University and University programs competently and professionally.
  • Prepare progress reports; inform directors of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions. Contribute to production of effective external communication instruments for projects and progress.
  • Prepare and submit reports and assessments as requested and required.
  • Supports the Director of the Gould Center and Co-Director of ePluribus in other related activities.

Qualified Candidates Will Possess The Following Credentials And Skills

  • JD or LLM degree, and 3 years of relevant experience working in higher education, teaching, coaching, or training experience
  • Specialized training/certification in dispute resolution
  • Professional experience with mediation, negotiation, facilitation, constructive dialogue, and/or other forms of conflict resolution
  • Experience or interest in teaching these skills in an academic settings for students, staff, and faculty
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, collaboration, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Curriculum design experience or interest
  • Project management skills

  • Education and interest in dispute resolution (e.g., recent experience in negotiation and other conflict resolution courses preferred)
  • Demonstrated understanding of how a university operates and makes decisions
  • A positive, resilient, and professional approach to university constituencies and contingencies
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Strong PC and Mac skills, including Microsoft Office suite and Google Apps; willingness to learn and master new software
  • The ability to work independently and complete projects accurately and on time with minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to thrive in a multi-task, fast-paced environment, including working in a team-centered manner
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate with minimal supervision

The expected pay range for this position is $116,966-$150,114 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
