Job Description

The Department of Nursing within the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences (MCNHS) invites applicants to join our diverse college as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning September 1, 2026. Research experience is required and an established program of research with evidence of external funding is desirable. This tenure track position is designed to improve and strengthen our research portfolio as well as our educational undergraduate and graduate programs. We are particularly interested in faculty applicants with expertise in health policy, aging/gerontology, maternal and child health, mental and behavioral health, community-engaged research, and clinically focused research (i.e. cardiovascular, diabetes, oncology).

Applicants must possess an earned research doctorate (in nursing or a related field) and be eligible for RN licensure in Massachusetts. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a postdoctoral fellowship, established an independent research agenda, demonstrated ability or promise to secure external funding for research, and published peer-reviewed, data-based articles. Teaching experience in higher education is preferred and experience with online teaching is desirable; teaching experience in other settings will be considered. Our programs focus on health across the life course of individuals from diverse populations and target improving health equity in populations at risk for healthcare disparities. For more information, please go to www.umb.edu/academics/cnhs.

The MCNHS and its Office of Research offer strong internal and external mentoring programs for faculty, including grant proposal and manuscript preparation. The Manning College offers a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research opportunities. Current faculty collaborations include those with numerous major academic and medical institutions in and around Boston, including the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, UMass Chan Medical School, Boston Children’s Hospital, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and many community, public, and private health care agencies. The National Cancer Institute funds the University of Massachusetts Boston-Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center grant (https://umb-dfhcc.org/); this longstanding collaboration has enabled faculty at both institutions to strengthen and extend partnerships for research on health disparities, PhD training, and community outreach.

The BS, MS, and DNP nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The MS and DNP programs focus on preparation of Family Nurse Practitioners and Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioners. The major focus of the PhD nursing program is on population health and health policy.

Application Instructions:

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae (CV) and a cover letter that includes a summary of their research/scholarly interests and a teaching/mentoring statement. Additionally, submit a minimum of two letters of recommendation.

UMass Boston is the third most diverse university in the country, with more than 60% of our undergraduate students coming from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome.

Given this context, please articulate how your approach to teaching, advising, and mentoring:

  • will engage with the diverse life experiences of students,
  • will reflect an appreciation for the ways in which students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and
  • will reflect how your own life experiences and background shapes your practices and commitments as an instructor, mentor, researcher, and scholar.

For more information, please contact: Professor Sun Kim (sun.kim@umb.edu) or Professor Rosemary Samia (rosemary.samia@umb.edu), co-chairs, Nursing Faculty Search Committee. The position will remain open until filled.

UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $80,000 and $111,000 for this position.

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment. Exceptional candidates may be considered for salaries above the published range to ensure competitiveness within the academic market.

UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact HR@umb.edu or 617-287-5150.
