Description

Lafayette College is a highly selected undergraduate liberal arts and engineering institution located in Easton, Pennsylvania, 1.5 hours from New York City and Philadelphia. As a member of the production team, the Assistant Production Manager/Sound Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional performance production support with a focus on audio experiences for a diverse range of theatre, dance, and music productions, presented events, and other special happenings. The Assistant Production Manager/Sound Engineer will work collaboratively to support student, academic, community, and professional events and performances in the Williams Center for the Arts, and consult with and support other venues on campus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Production Manager with production scheduling, equipment rental, and other administrative duties.
  • Source, purchase, maintain, and operate all sound equipment.
  • Run the sound console for tech and performances as scheduled/assigned.
  • Operate as the house sound engineer for presented events and/or work closely to support the touring production team.
  • Assist and support student productions, academic rehearsals and performances, and college and community events with appropriate sound needs as well as stage access and work lights.
  • Stay informed on current advancements in audio technology and industry trends, actively seeking opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement.
  • Work load-in, rehearsals, strike, and run crew for produced and presented shows as scheduled.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of all sound storage and workspaces.
  • Prioritize safe working practices to maintain a secure environment for all staff, student employees, and guest artists.
  • Train and mentor student technicians.
  • Audio recording for archival purposes.
  • Work collaboratively across campus to support professional productions, exhibits, academic, student, and community productions.
  • Advise and support, sound related issues in Weiss Theater, Landis Cinema, and the Studio Theater.

Qualifications

Professional Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience (3 years) as an audio engineer with a strong emphasis on live mixing and playback, demonstrating proficiency in delivering high-quality sound experiences for theatrical productions, concerts, or other events.
  • Advanced skills in industry-standard computer programs, including Microsoft Office, and Q-Lab, etc. enabling seamless integration of sound designs with production workflows.
  • Confidence in existing knowledge and willingness to learn more.
  • Proficient in operating and troubleshooting a variety of theatrical, dance, and concert sound equipment.
  • Experience coordinating sound with streaming, projection, and other visual elements.
  • Ability to interpret technical ground plans, sections, and sound plots, facilitating effective collaboration with production teams and designers to realize artistic visions.
  • Proven track record of quickly and efficiently resolving system issues and technical challenges, ensuring uninterrupted performance and production continuity.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering positive working relationships with colleagues and artists across various departments.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate evolving production requirements and schedules, including evening and weekend work.
  • Familiarity with relevant safety protocols and regulations pertaining to the operation of sound equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and practices.
  • Exhibit a critical consciousness and genuine interest in promoting equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible workplace values and practices while working with individuals of diverse needs, personalities, and work styles, and employing an optimistic and solution-oriented mindset towards fostering inclusivity and support within the team environment.
  • Posses a valid drivers license.

Physical Requirements

  • This position entails extended periods of standing and sitting, manual dexterity for operating office equipment, and the ability to read and interpret documents, while requiring lifting and carrying objects up to 75 pounds, engaging in repetitive tasks, walking, bending, and reaching within various work environments, including stairs. Candidates should be comfortable with these physical demands and able to maintain productivity and focus throughout the workday.
  • This role may involve working on ladders up to 30 feet high to access sound equipment and rigging. Candidates should be comfortable and experienced working at elevated heights and demonstrate adherence to safety protocols and procedures when working on elevated platforms. This position is required to be on-site and in attendance for various rehearsals, performances, and other events. These will be communicated and scheduled in advance.
