Responsibilities
This position plays an integral role in ensuring research animals and facilities are maintained consistent with exemplary standards of animal care. This position is primarily responsible for performing routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, monitoring equipment for proper function and maintaining sanitary conditions. The incumbent will operate mechanical washers and ensure cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order; Perform routine start-up and shut down procedures; Operate autoclaves to sterilize or decontaminate caging and equipment; Assist in receiving and storing materials, food, and supplies; and transport animals, caging, and supplies between animal rooms and facilities, requiring a valid Driver's License and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
This position is responsible for providing diligent and responsible animal care, including but not limited to feeding and watering animals, changing and cleaning cages, sanitizing equipment and facilities, and assisting with the technical procedures including record keeping, animal identification, preparing diets, etc.
This position requires understanding and compliance with departmental and University policies and procedures, as well as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and regulations set forth in the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, as well as OSHA standards, other applicable federal and state regulations, and departmental standard operating procedures when working with hazardous agents, animals, and power equipment.

Qualifications
- High school diploma/equivalent and two years of experience. Post-high school education may substitute for experience at the comparable rate.
- Must be able to perform physical tasks, such as gripping, reaching, bending, and have ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds.
- AALAS certification at ALAT level or able to obtain certification within 6 months of eligibility.
- A valid State of Florida or Georgia Driver’s License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.
- Experience working in lab animal sciences or in maintaining facilities.
- Knowledge of and ability to safely operate machinery and equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and take necessary safety precautions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and resolve conflicts.
- Some post-secondary education.
