The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training and internal pay comparison. Boston University's Institute for Excellence in Teaching & Learning is focused on elevating and transforming teaching and learning innovation across the entire BU community and its 17 schools and colleges to deliver a superior student experience. This role is pivotal in advancing the university's strategic commitment to instructional excellence, and the continual enhancement of the student experience. The Assistant Director, Faculty Engagement will work in close partnership with faculty, academic leaders, and campus stakeholders to design and implement high-impact faculty programming initiatives that elevate teaching practices and foster a culture of scholarly and evidence-informed teaching.

Primary Responsibilities:

Faculty Support & Engagement-

  • Collaborate with faculty to assess instructional needs and develop responsive programs that support teaching and learning effectiveness.
  • Lead programming in teaching and learning tailored to different faculty cohorts (new faculty, mid career, teaching track, etc.).
  • Facilitate dialogue and promote collaboration around pedagogical concepts such as active learning, course and program redesign, experiential learning, workforce impact, and student engagement.
  • Design and deliver professional development resources, earning communities, convenings and other programming focused on evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Provide support to faculty on course design, instructional strategies, assessment, and the integration of educational technologies to support excellence in teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to university-wide teaching enhancement initiatives, including curriculum transformation efforts and high-impact practices.
  • Assist in the design, development and assessment of teaching and learning resources, toolkits, and digital content to elevate faculty experiences and scale initiatives across the BU community.

Faculty Engagement & Community Building:

  • Lead initiatives that build faculty community, such as peer mentoring programs, faculty learning circles, and interdisciplinary teaching collaborations across schools and colleges.
  • Foster inclusive and supportive environments for faculty dialogue around teaching and student success.
  • Collaborate with academic departments and centers across BUs schools and colleges to co-sponsor events and support disciplinary teaching initiatives.
  • Coordinate programs that recognize and elevate excellent teaching, such as teaching awards, showcases, and symposiums.
  • Develop strategies to engage early-career faculty and support faculty throughout their teaching careers.

Strategic Leadership & Administration:

  • Lead and facilitate interdisciplinary faculty learning communities, workshops, and retreats focused on pedagogical scholarship and innovation.
  • Foster strong relationships with faculty to understand disciplinary teaching cultures and promote cross-campus collaboration.
  • Coordinate programs that recognize and elevate excellent teaching, such as teaching awards, showcases, and symposiums.
  • Develop strategies to engage early-career faculty and support faculty throughout their teaching careers.

Required Skills

Required Skills:

  • Experience in higher education with at least 7-10 years in leading academic and curricular innovation initiatives in a university environment.
  • Experience working with faculty, students and administrators and influencing, leading and driving initiatives across a matrix of schools and departments.
  • Experience steering and guiding pedagogical innovation by leveraging education tools, learning management systems and related technology in a consistent way to advocate and drive continuity in the delivery of a quality learning experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with professionals and faculty to build faculty communities and cross-disciplinary initiatives in a large matrixed academic setting.
  • Strong oral and written presentation skills.
  • A master's degree in Curriculum Design, Professional Development, Education or related field; a PhD is desirable.
