Essential Job Duties

We’re excited to welcome a collaborative and experienced fundraising professional to join the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) as our Assistant Dean of Philanthropy. You do not need a background in agriculture and life sciences to thrive in this role — what matters most is your willingness to learn about agriculture, your passion for building relationships and securing support for important programs.

This is a permanent position with secure funding, part of a national search for the right leader (an interim is currently serving while we find that person). The Assistant Dean will play a vital role in leading our college’s advancement efforts, reporting directly to the Dean and working in close partnership with University Advancement.

In This Position, You Will

  • Lead a dedicated team of about 30 advancement professionals, including gift officers, communications specialists, and engagement staff.
  • Collaborate with the Dean and university leaders to set and advance our fundraising vision and strategy.
  • Foster strong relationships with donors, alumni, businesses, community leaders, faculty, and staff.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors, helping secure transformational gifts that advance our mission.
  • Serve as President of The NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc., working closely with multiple foundations and advisory boards that support a wide range of research and outreach programs.

You’ll work in a supportive, team-oriented environment with a clear commitment to program growth, alignment, and success. This is a meaningful opportunity to make a lasting impact at a dynamic college that touches communities across the state and beyond.

If you’re a proven fundraising leader eager to help shape the future — regardless of your familiarity with agriculture — we encourage you to apply!

Duties of the successful incumbent for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • In partnership with the Dean and the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development, coordinate the complete range of philanthropic activities related to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) including planning, managing and implementing annual fundraising strategies, operating plans and budgets designed to attain the philanthropic goals and objectives of the College and the foundation.
  • Lead all aspects of the fundraising process that will maximize the College’s capacity and outcomes including preparation and implementation of annual fundraising goals and a comprehensive major gifts program that generates individual and corporate donors and other philanthropic support.
  • Oversee initiatives to identify, qualify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward donors and prospects as well as collaborate with and support the Dean, department heads, faculty and volunteers in their related fundraising efforts.
  • Build working relationships with academic department heads, faculty, and administrators throughout the College to thoroughly understand their programs and priorities and to both assist in managing their respective advancement activities and represent their needs.
  • Lead and manage a team of advancement professionals, set policy, procedures, and best practices; provide inspirational leadership, mentorship and coaching to achieve annual goals while adhering to university performance standards.
  • Model and reinforce a sophisticated, non-territorial approach to donor-centric philanthropy that encourages teamwork, flexibility, and responsiveness.
  • Monitor progress against goals and share reports on progress with the Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development.
  • Manage a focused portfolio of major gift and principal gift prospects and donors.
  • Collaborate and consult with the Dean and the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development for coordination of resources and services.
  • Willingness/ability to travel frequently and participate in occasional evening and weekend activities; perform other relevant duties as assigned.
  • Serves as the President and provides management and oversight of the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. board of directors.
  • Provide effective fiscal management of the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. and CALS Advancement budgets.
