Job Description

Montgomery College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Unit is seeking one full-time Adult Education Instructor to teach English Language Arts, in-person for the GED® Program, and English Language Skills for ESL at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, a maximum-security facility located in Boyds, Maryland. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This is a non-bargaining, exempt, grade 25 position.

Under general direction and/or supervision, the incumbent in this position plans and delivers instruction targeting learner needs and goals of adults with variable literacy levels, as well as at risk populations. The incumbent provides adult basic education as needed in order to (1) pass the English Language Arts section of the GED® exam, and (2) develop basic English language skills (ESOL), using established curricula, materials and assessment data.

The instructor will be expected to complete detailed, daily reports; abide by all College policies and procedures; and abide by all policies and procedures set by the Montgomery County Department of Corrections.

This is a temporary position with benefits funded through June 30, 2026. Employment continuation beyond this period is contingent upon need and funding.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Plan, develop and provide instruction in adult basic education in preparation for the GED® Exam, and English Language development for ESL.
  • Teach students to:
    • Analyze and create text features and technique.
    • Use evidence to understand, analyze and create arguments.
    • Apply knowledge of English language conventions and usage.
  • Customize instruction to meet each individual student at the starting point for their unique literacy level.
  • Maintain sensitivity awareness of variable educational backgrounds while teaching.
  • Manage classroom atmosphere to promote encouragement, support and respect among and between students and instructors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
  • Two to three years of experience teaching the areas of English Language Arts on the GED® exam, English for Speakers of Other Languages, or Special Education.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Special Education or related educational field, or in the English Language Arts areas covered on the GED® exam.
  • Strong academic background in teaching English Language Arts and ESL with formal instructional training.
  • Experience working with various literacy levels among adults, and proven ability to deliver high quality, effective GED® instruction with a focus on measurable learning outcomes.
  • Experience working with diverse and at-risk populations, preferably within a correctional or similar institutional setting.
  • Ability to provide high-quality instruction within a structured behavior management framework.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsible educational environment.

Hiring Range: $59,887-$77,830 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $95,773.
