Job Overview

The Accessibility Coordinator possesses a strong background in working with students with cognitive, psychological/psychiatric, and physical disabilities. This individual must be able to interpret the components of a psychological evaluation and other diagnostic documentation in order to determine reasonable accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Furthermore, the Accessibility Coordinator should possess a knowledge of how to engage students in a careful interactive process to make accommodation determinations.

The Coordinator works with undergraduate students, graduate students (including MBA students), and medical students. The Coordinator must be able to provide guidance to students who are seeking information about undergoing evaluations to determine whether or not they have disabilities.

In addition to working directly with students, the Coordinator serves as an advocate for students with disabilities by aiding them in the implementation of their accommodations. The Coordinator addresses inquiries and concerns raised by faculty to ensure that accommodations do not compromise the curricular goals of a professor's course.

The Accessibility Coordinator carries out the mission of the Academic Resource Center by meeting the needs of students in the spirit of cura personalis and acting as a resource for students, staff, faculty, and parents. The Coordinator must remain current with disability issues and understand the legal ramifications of undertaking the work in order to avoid potential risk for the University.

Work Interactions

The Accessibility Coordinator works with a host of stakeholders. Students represent the largest population with whom the Specialist interacts; hence, the Coordinator must be knowledgeable with the various academic programs and the curricular frameworks of the programs. Also, the Coordinator must be sensitive to the stigma associated with disability to facilitate the elimination of stereotypes and misconceptions of what it means to claim disability as an identity. The Coordinator interacts with parents by providing information about the documentation and accommodation process and addressing concerns they might have about their students. Working with academic counselors and deans, faculty, and Student Affairs administrators represents another aspect of the interactions that the Accessibility Coordinator has on a daily basis. The Accessibility Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of the Academic Resource Center who provides guidance and support in aiding the Coordinator in interpreting case law and applying it to the determination of reasonable accommodations. The Coordinator works with fellow Academic Resource Center administrators by collaborating on projects and carrying out the missions of the Academic Resource Center, Student Affairs, and the University.

Requirements And Qualifications

The Accessibility Coordinator must possess a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, or Social Work, Higher Education/Student Personnel Administration; however, consideration will be given if the Specialist has previous experience working with students with disabilities. The Coordinator possesses 3-5 years working with students with disabilities. The Coordinator must be able to work with culturally and academically diverse populations of students and must be able to counsel and direct students to appropriate University services. The Coordinator must possess the following qualifications/skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to problem-solve
  • Prescribe and practice ethical behavior
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Appreciation of Jesuit culture and values
  • Uphold professional standards
  • Available to work evenings and occasional weekends.

A candidate who possesses a Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, or Social Work, Higher Education/Student Personnel Administration is preferred.

Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$44,022.00 - $73,406.80

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
