Summary

We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to be the first dedicated engineer on this new data platform. You'll architect the data lake, design the schema researchers and future AI agents will rely on, and build the workflows that move data safely and correctly from raw sequencing output to research-ready tables. You'll work closely with the team that owns our sequencing pipeline, with infrastructure and DevOps, with a cross-functional data-model working group, and with scientific and leadership stakeholders to translate governance and scientific requirements into durable infrastructure.

This is a foundation-first role in a greenfield environment - a lot of the calls on data model, storage, and governance are still open, and you'll be the one making them. As the platform matures, we'll build out the full researcher-facing product on top of what you build: upload, monitoring, analysis, and natural-language querying. You'll have a hand in that too, and your scope will grow with the platform.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and build the data infrastructure that stores and serves our genomic data, including ingestion, storage tiering, and the schema everything else queries against.
• Build and maintain the data conversion workflows that turn output from our sequencing pipeline into clean, reliable, queryable data.
• Implement the access controls and de-identification steps required before data can be used for research, working with compliance and scientific stakeholders to get the rules right.
• Help shape the core data model alongside a small cross-functional group, including decisions on schema and structure that the rest of the platform will build on.
• Build the backend services and early application layer researchers will use: authentication, project and job tracking, and the views for uploading data and reviewing results.
• Partner with the sequencing pipeline team, infrastructure engineering, and scientific and product stakeholders to sequence the work and make tradeoffs.

Required Qualifications:

• 5 years of experience as a backend or infrastructure-focused engineer, shipping and operating production systems.
• Real experience with data platforms, data lakes, or similar large-scale data infrastructure - this is a data-systems role, not primarily a CRUD-app role.
• Strong AWS experience, particularly with storage, data access, and governance.
• Comfort with data modeling at scale: schema design, grain decisions, and query performance tradeoffs.
• Ability to work independently in an ambiguous, greenfield environment and make sound calls without much precedent to lean on.
• Strong communication skills - you'll work directly with scientists and non-engineers, not just other engineers.
• Comfort using AI-assisted development tools as part of how you build.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with sensitive or regulated data, e.g. healthcare, life sciences, or finance.
• Experience with open table formats (Parquet, Iceberg, Delta Lake) or engine-agnostic query architectures.
• Experience with privacy-preserving analytics, such as clean rooms or federated approaches.
• Genomics, bioinformatics, or other scientific data experience.
• Interest in healthcare, research, or scientific products.

Location: San Diego, Onsite

Compensation: $180,000 - $220,000 BOE

Reports to: Chief Product Officer
