Innovative Leadership Academy is a Houston-based educational nonprofit dedicated to equipping students for the future through creativity, collaboration, leadership, and real-world learning. The organization blends arts, technology, entrepreneurship, and hands-on innovation to develop students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills in nurturing, inclusive learning environments.

Innovative Leadership Academy is currently developing a proposed public charter school model designed to serve students and families in the Sunnyside and South Houston communities. The proposed school will focus on culturally responsive, project-based learning through its signature Innovation Labs framework, integrating literacy, STEM, arts, leadership development, and career-connected learning experiences. The Academy’s vision is to create a transformative educational ecosystem where students are empowered to become innovative thinkers, community leaders, and future-ready learners prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Role Description

As a Board Member of Innovative Leadership Academy, you will play a key role in guiding the organization’s vision, governance, and strategic direction during an exciting stage of growth and development. Responsibilities include attending regular board meetings, providing governance and fiduciary oversight, contributing to policy development, supporting fundraising and partnership efforts, and serving as an ambassador for the organization throughout the Houston community.

Board members will also help support the long-term development of the proposed charter school initiative in Sunnyside, including community engagement, strategic planning, advocacy, and sustainability efforts. This is an on-site volunteer leadership role based in Houston, Texas.

Qualifications
  • Leadership and Governance: Experience in policymaking, organizational strategy, governance, or executive decision-making.
  • Fundraising and Advocacy: Experience with fundraising initiatives, donor engagement, sponsorships, or community advocacy.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with board members, educators, families, and community partners.
  • Financial and Strategic Acumen: Understanding of budgets, financial oversight, sustainability planning, and strategic resource allocation.
  • Commitment to Education: Passion for fostering creativity, collaboration, innovation, and leadership in education, particularly within arts, technology, and community-centered learning environments.
  • Community Impact Mindset: Interest in supporting educational equity and transformative opportunities for students and families in underserved communities such as Sunnyside and South Houston.
  • Experience in nonprofit management, education policy, charter schools, workforce development, business leadership, or community development is a plus.
