Project Engineer (Entry Level) - Gas/Electric Utilities
We are seeking a self-sufficient, highly motivated Entry-Level Project Engineer with an entrepreneurial mindset to support gas and electric utility infrastructure projects within our growing Services group. The Project Engineer will support the planning, design, and construction of utility projects by working closely with Project Managers, engineers, designers, and construction teams. Candidates should be technically curious, proactive, and motivated to grow both their skill set and the organization as a whole.
Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers and senior engineers in the execution of gas and electric utility projects from planning through construction closeout
- Assist with tracking project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned projects or work packages
- Coordinate with internal teams (engineering, design, construction, procurement) to ensure tasks and technical deliverables are completed on time
- Prepare and maintain project documentation, including schedules, cost tracking logs, meeting notes, submittals, and project reports
- Assist with monitoring key project metrics, critical path activities, risks, and change orders
- Support construction activities by tracking field progress, reviewing contractor documentation, and assisting with issue resolution
- Help prepare cost estimates, budget updates, forecasts, and invoice documentation under the guidance of senior staff
- Interface with utility clients, contractors, and third-party consultants as directed, serving as a technical and coordination resource
- Develop a working knowledge of gas and electric utility design standards, construction practices, and safety requirements
- Support procurement activities, including tracking material orders, vendor coordination, and delivery schedules
- Participate in quality control reviews of plans, specifications, and construction documents
- Assist with data collection and analysis related to utility replacement, relocation, abandonment, and new installation projects
- Actively engage in training, mentorship, and continuous learning to build technical and project delivery skills in the utility industry
Qualifications
- Valid California driver’s license
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical), Construction Management, or a related technical field
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) preferred but not required
- 0–2 years of experience in engineering, construction, utilities, or a related field (internships and co-op experience accepted)
- Interest in gas and electric utility infrastructure, including pipeline, distribution, transmission, and underground utility projects
- Basic understanding of engineering concepts, construction workflows, and project documentation
- Ability to support project scope, schedule, compliance, and cost tracking with guidance from senior staff
- Familiarity with public utility design or construction is a plus, but not required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); exposure to scheduling (P6) or project controls tools is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Positive attitude with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to learn utility standards, client requirements, and industry best practices
