Pharmacist in Charge (PIC)

Location: On-Site
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:30 AM–6:00 PM MST
Hours: 40 hours/week
Travel: Up to 10%
Salary Range: $136,400–$177,400 annually

Position Summary

The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) is responsible for ensuring the pharmacy maintains full compliance with all applicable state board of pharmacy regulations and other regulatory requirements. This leadership role oversees pharmacy compliance, operational excellence, and pharmacist scheduling while serving as the primary subject matter expert for pharmacy operations.

Working collaboratively with pharmacy leadership, the PIC provides guidance and support to the pharmacist team, ensuring appropriate staffing, workflow optimization, regulatory compliance, and achievement of operational key performance indicators (KPIs).

In addition to leadership responsibilities, the PIC will perform hands-on staff pharmacist duties, including prescription verification, order verification, and final product verification to support daily pharmacy operations.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance & Operations

  • Maintain compliance with all Board of Pharmacy regulations and applicable federal and state requirements.
  • Ensure pharmacy policies and procedures support regulatory compliance while optimizing operational efficiency.
  • Lead quality review event (QRE) investigations, ensure management review is completed, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA, privacy regulations, and professional standards.
  • Support continuous process improvement initiatives and operational excellence.

Leadership & Staff Management

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to the pharmacist team.
  • Develop pharmacist schedules that maintain appropriate staffing ratios.
  • Coordinate staffing rotations for:
    • Canister checks
    • PV3 verification
    • Other operational functions as needed
  • Schedule PRN pharmacists to support weekend production and staffing needs.
  • Collaborate with leadership to maximize pharmacist productivity while ensuring operational coverage.
  • Observe pharmacist performance and provide coaching, feedback, and recommendations to leadership.

Clinical & Operational Support

  • Perform staff pharmacist responsibilities, including:
    • Prescription verification
    • Order verification
    • Final prescription verification
    • InspectRx image review
    • PV1 and PV3 verification
  • Support production workflows to ensure timely prescription fulfillment.
  • Balance administrative responsibilities with direct patient care and operational support.

Staff Development

  • Lead onboarding and training for new pharmacists.
  • Develop ongoing education and training programs focused on compliance, workflow, and operational excellence.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and mentorship.
  • Identify skill gaps and implement targeted development plans.
  • Promote continuing education and professional development opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Complete administrative and project work in a timely manner.
  • Participate in policy development and labor relations as appropriate.
  • Perform additional leadership duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required.

Licensure

  • Current pharmacist license in the State of California or ability to obtain California licensure.
  • Willingness to obtain additional state pharmacist licenses within 12–18 months as required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading pharmacists and pharmacy teams with demonstrated success in regulatory compliance and operational performance.
  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience leading pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians in a clinical, pharmacy operations, or contact center environment.
  • Experience managing high-volume pharmacy fulfillment operations preferred.
  • Registered or eligible to become registered with the applicable State Board of Pharmacy.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong knowledge of state and federal pharmacy regulations, including HIPAA and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse requirements.
  • Demonstrated success in pharmacy operations, workflow optimization, and quality improvement.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and coaching abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical thinking and clinical judgment.
  • Experience with project management, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and pharmacy management software.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, hear, speak, and use computers and other office equipment for extended periods. Travel between assigned pharmacy locations may be required. Occasional extended work hours may be necessary to meet business needs.
