Under the supervision of the Purchasing Agent, performs a variety of tasks related to the purchase, storage and issuance of materials, supplies and parts. Assists in the purchasing function including buying supplies, materials and parts, and acts as stockroom coordinator. Enters and processes data into the computerized purchasing record keeping system.
Essential Functions
- Functions as stockroom coordinator. Charges out equipment parts and materials, keeps related records and maintains inventory levels.
- Utilizes forklift/JCB to unloads and organizes incoming stock inventory and supplies, as needed. Checks to assure that inventory and supplies and quantities received conform to the particular packing slips and purchase orders.
- Places orders for stock inventory and various equipment parts, as requested. Picks up equipment parts and/or vehicles from various vendors. Delivers equipment parts, vehicles and/or supplies to other garages or project areas within Ingham County, as directed by the Purchasing Agent.
- Responds to inquiries concerning the status of parts and supply orders.
- Contacts suppliers to determine part and supply availability and cost, and receives incoming calls related to same.
- Assists in maintaining inventory and equipment records as they relate to items purchased, cost delivery and warranty information using an automated purchasing database. Performs periodic spot inventories and assists in the annual inventory.
- Assists as courier in delivering mail to the post office, picking up incoming mail and delivering documents and packages as requested by other departments, as directed by the Purchasing Agent.
- Maintains diesel and gasoline fuel inventories for all road department garages.
- Serves as a resource person for other departments for information about supplies, equipment, parts and materials to be purchased.
- Using the automated purchasing system, issues purchase orders once appropriate personnel has approved purchase, if required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- This position requires the ability to handle varying and often high levels of stress.
Working Conditions
- This position works in both an indoor and outdoor environment. While indoors, there may be exposure to notable lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions. While outdoors, exposure to lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions cannot be controlled and may be extreme.
- This position is exposed to air quality conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, etc.
- This position is exposed to noise levels which require shouting in order to be heard.
