CEI Inspector - West Columbia, SC
Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is seeking qualified Inspectors to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team in Columbia, SC to support various transportation projects with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in District 1.
The inspector will monitor the work of contractors to ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, and quality standards for transportation projects of moderate to considerable complexity. In addition to inspection responsibilities, the inspector may be required to also provide inspection/project management, under the direction of a Project Manager. This Inspector will provide direction to junior inspectors on the project as needed.

It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.
Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods. Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits. Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic.
Expected Hours of Work
The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule.

Responsibilities
- Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
- Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
- Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
- Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
- Monitor placement of pilings, reinforcing and structural steel, concrete, and backfill.
- Verifies lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
- Perform accurate calculations and computations.
- Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
- Review contractor submittals for conformance to project documents and specifications.
- Document and immediately report any non-compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
- Recording Daily Work Reports to include quantities in Site Manager and for American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASTHO) projects.
- Above average math and problem-solving skills are required.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US.
- Must have a current driver’s license with a safe driving record; ICE is a drug-free workplace.
- CEI Inspector:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate or BS degree in Civil Engineering is a plus.
- Two years of CEI experience working on roadway and bridge inspection is desired.
- Experience working on SCDOT projects is desired.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
- Mid-Senior CEI Inspector:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate or BS degree in Civil Engineering is a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of CEI experience working on roadway and bridge inspection is required.
- Experience working on SCDOT projects is desired.
- Experience coordinating inspection teams is preferred.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.

- Earthwork and Base
- Concrete Level 1 & 2
- ACI Field Concrete Technician
