Summary:

 

The Network Specialist will be a highly skilled and very hands-on individual – and most importantly, a team player. Responsible for the planning, engineering and support of Topeka Public Schools network infrastructure. This position is the primary resource for implementation, validating designs with the network team, maintenance and troubleshooting support of Topeka Public Schools LAN, WAN, and Wireless networks. Topeka Public Schools owns and operates a city-wide fiber network joining 40 locations with 600 switches and supporting over 40,000 district owned devices (such as PC’s, iPads, Chromebooks, Printers, IP Phones, Physical Security, and more).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Will work as a part of our team of Network Specialists and project teams to maintain and further develop the district’s network and services – including procedures, policies, and documentation.
  • Perform day-to-day network administration and maintenance to ensure network performance meets approved standards and requirements.
  • Support of: Cisco Routers, Cisco Switches, Cisco Wireless, DNS/DHCP Servers, F5 Firewalls, F5 Load balancers, Arctic Wolf Sensors, and other network appliances.
  • Support and maintain our Cisco Call manager, Unity, and VOIP desktop phone environment.
  • Work actively on project teams both within Information Technology and other District departments.
  • Provide requirements to technical teams to support new initiatives including power, cabling, security, monitoring, storage, and network configuration.
  • Document new additions, review and maintain existing network documentation, maintain change history, and keep up-to-date tickets records.
  • Provide input and recommendations to continually improve and strengthen our network services.

 

Qualifications - Knowledge and Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Cisco IOS, Cisco Nexus, Cisco Routers, Catalyst POE Switches, Cisco Wi-Fi, Cisco DNA Center, Cisco ISE, and Cisco Firewalls.
  • Solid understanding of WAN technologies, IPSEC, VPN, EIGRP.
  • Solid understanding of VoIP technologies, Lync, Cisco, SIP, SIP Trunking.
  • Solid understanding of and technical experience with TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and Active Directory.
  • Understanding of network security methodologies as a whole, including but not limited to: ACLs, Firewalls, VPNs (tunneling, IPsec, PPTP, etc.), and physical security.
  • Bluecat, F5, Netscout, Avigilon ACC/ACM, AIphone knowledge and experience is a plus.

 

Licenses and Certificates

  • Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license.
  • CCNA, CCNP, Cisco Voice Certifications are a plus.

 

Physical Abilities

  • Requires: ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom-type locations and to bend, stoop, crawl and reach to install cables and equipment; sufficient hand-eye coordination and dexterity to make small component connections; sufficient visual acuity to read technical documents and instructions and align small components; sufficient auditory ability to carry on routine conversations; ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 75 lbs.) on an occasional basis; and the ability to work in confined areas with noise variations, dust, and limited ventilation.

 

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor, positioning in cramped areas, and handling of medium weight, yet, awkward materials.
  • Work is performed generally during regular office hours with occasional project work or requests for assistance on evenings and weekends.
