Teacher for a Day/Substitute

General Information

Subject to Call

We will make every effort to give you advance notice of your assignment as far in advance as possible.
However, there will be times when you may be called at 8:00 a.m. and asked to be at the school as soon as
possible. You may be called during the middle of the day if a teacher becomes ill or an emergency arises.
These calls are not frequent but they do occur. You should indicate on your application if you wish to teach
in a certain school.
Previous Teaching Commitment
If a campus principal or campus secretary calls you to work after you have agreed to work for another
campus principal, be sure to inform the latter of this.
Specialized Classes
You may frequently be called to teach a subject you feel you cannot handle because you are not prepared in
this area. Please do not let this keep you from accepting the assignment; the teacher leaves detailed lesson
plans and instructions. The campus principal will assist you in obtaining these plans and instructions upon
your arrival at school.
Work Day
Each campus has specific working hours for the teachers. Please note these times when reading Specific
Campus Rules and Procedures.
Dress
Wear suitable clothes for a workday. Dress neatly and comfortably. No warm-up suits or short sets are to
be worn. Any offensive tattoo must be covered. No extra piercings other than ear lobes on women.
Discipline
Students in the Industrial Schools are expected to behave toward adults with respect. When your students
are engaged with meaningful classroom activities, there should be no discipline problems. The suggestions
below will help you in dealing with problems, which do arise.
1. If possible, greet your students at the doorway. As they come into class, see that they have the necessary
books, pens, paper, etc. If they do not, remind them what they will need and let the students know you
expect them to come prepared and on time.
2. Inform the students who you are and clearly state the activity the students are responsible for. Your
expectations of your students should be high.
3. Remain in the classroom with the students. You are responsible for the conduct of the children for the
full day.
4. Never permit your class to "get out of hand". If this seems to be occurring, assert your expectations for
behavior, or send a student for the campus principal.
5. Never permit your class to roam the halls or be released from class early for lunch or any other reason.
6. Students must remain in the classroom until the bell rings unless other instructions are given by the
teacher or you receive a signed note from the campus principal.

7. Fill out the teacher form and incident card (one for each student involved) at the end of the day for the
campus principal and the teacher.
8. Review the Teacher for a Day folder/lesson plans before beginning the class instruction.
Each campus principal will be happy to explain their campus rules to you. Please take the time to become
familiar with these rules and procedures by reading the campus rules and procedures at the end of this book.
