Mechanic / Bus Driver

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Transportation Department

Under the general supervision of the Transportation Director and the day-to-day direction of the Head Mechanic, performs mechanical work on the district vehicle fleet and drives a school bus. During non-driving periods and summer months, assists the Facilities Department with general maintenance and other operational tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Mechanical experience preferred and/or ability to demonstrate mechanical skills.
3. Ability to handle a large vehicle efficiently.
4. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive a school bus.
5. Current DOT physical card.
6. Must have an acceptable driving record.
7. Must comply with Federal DOT drug testing requirements.
8. Must be a self-starter with a positive attitude requiring little supervision.
9. Owns and furnishes needed hand tools.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Satisfactory health conditions as dictated by the DOT and Iowa Department of Education, and as certified by a competent licensed physician or medical authority.
2. Visual acuity.
3. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
4. Occasional lifting, dragging, pushing, or pulling up to 100 pounds.
5. Frequent walking, bending, stooping, climbing, or crawling.
6. Be free of impairment of the use of the foot, leg, hand, or arm, or other defects or limitations likely to interfere with the ability to perform mechanical functions and/or safely control a school bus.
7. Ability to depress the fuel and brake pedals with the right foot and leg, requiring up to 70 pounds of force.
8. Ability to exit the rear emergency door without assistance (approximately 3.5 feet).
9. Frequent repetitive hand movements and gripping.
10. Ability to walk 465 feet without stopping.
11. Ability to fit through a 2-foot by 2-foot emergency exit.
12. Ability to push and pull objects up to 75 pounds.
13. Physical work comprises approximately 95% of job duties.
14. Able to work in all types of weather conditions.
15. Report to work each day clean, neat, and in uniform.
16. Able to climb ladders and work at various heights.
17. Able to work in confined spaces as required.
18. Ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
19. Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors.
2. Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, lubricants, acids, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
3. Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and/or inclement weather. 
4. Able to walk, kneel, bend, and twist to complete job responsibilities.
5. Ability to monitor radio messages while performing other work throughout assigned buildings and grounds.

REPORTS TO

Transportation Department: Transportation & Facilities Director

Receives day-to-day work direction from Head Mechanic for maintenance duties and from the Facilities Director or designee for facilities assignments.

Students when driving

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Twelve-month work year with wages and benefits established annually by the Board.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy 411.7 – Classified Employee Evaluation.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Must communicate effectively with other school personnel.
2. Will establish and maintain effective communication with riders.
3. Shall demonstrate efficient, effective communication with the public.
4. Must use appropriate radio communication skills.
5. Must complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and use proper documentation when driving a bus.
6. Must operate the bus and related equipment in a safe, efficient, and legal manner.
7. Maintains and enforces all provisions of the District's Bus Safety Rules for riders.
8. Completes assigned routes/trips safely and in a timely manner.
9. Must keep the interior and exterior of the bus clean.
10. Confronts emergency situations in accordance with safety-standard operational procedures.
11. Must keep public complaints regarding driving skills to a minimum.
12. Will work with the Transportation Director on complaints received from parents regarding discipline.
13. Will follow the preventive maintenance program for all department-owned vehicles.
14. Will assist the mechanic in keeping all department-owned vehicles in good repair.
15. Will complete paperwork as required by the district.
16. Review driver deficiency and check sheets and perform repairs as needed.
17. Keep tool and shop areas clean and neat.
18. Must attend required training programs.
19. Must continually demonstrate successful proficiency in preventive and light mechanical repair.
20. Demonstrate willingness to accept changes in normal routines.
21. Meets contract obligations regarding attendance and punctuality.
22. Complete required reports according to Iowa law and district expectations.
23. Assist the Director of Transportation with new driver in-service training.
24. Report unsafe driver or vehicle conditions to the mechanic and/or Director of Transportation.
25. Perform cleaning in all areas of buildings and surrounding grounds.
26. Perform other duties as may from time to time be assigned.
