The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 300 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness. With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

The Pulmonary, Asthma and Allergy Group in the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis is accepting applications for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. We seek outstanding scientists complementing are group areas of interest in asthma and food allergy. Candidates conducting cutting-edge immunology research are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants are expected to have or obtain external grant support and participate in teaching and committees.

In addition to maintaining a strong externally funded research program, faculty are expected to engage productively with other faculty in the Wells Center, fostering potential translational interactions, and participate in research training of fellows and students. In addition, involvement in service to IUSM, the Department of Pediatrics, and the Wells Center is also expected with no administrative responsibilities required at this time. The scientific environment at the School of Medicine and in Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research is highly collegial and includes interactions with clinicians in the Department of Pediatrics. Further interactions on campus include other Basic Science and Clinical Departments, as well as Research Centers and Institutes. Outstanding core facilities are also available.

IU School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the country, with more than 20,000 living alums and over 3,000 learners. Its diverse faculty comprises 3,275 full-time members and 3,579 volunteer faculty responsible for training medical, graduate, and postgraduate students. IU School of Medicine (IUSM) is Indiana’s only allopathic medical school. The Department of Pediatrics at IUSM/Riley Hospital for Children is a 400 -member faculty that consistently ranks within the top 10 pediatric departments in NIH-funded research in the United States (Peds 2023 #7 among all medical schools and #3 among all public institutions). The campus includes state-of-the-art laboratories in a dedicated pediatric research building, a comprehensive clinical research center, and a well-functioning biobank that all support research in the Department. Indiana Clinical Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) is available for collaboration and as a resource. The Department also has robust research relationships with the Regenstrief Institute in Health Informatics, Purdue Biomedical Engineering and Cook Biomedical in pediatric biodevices, and the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute in developing and testing orphan drug therapeutics. Riley Hospital is Indiana’s only comprehensive children’s hospital, with over 450 beds and 360,000 inpatient and outpatient visits in Indianapolis and 19 regional sites across the entire State. We have consistently ranked in 10/10 programs in US News and World Report and, most recently, eight programs in the top 25 and 2 in the top 10.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate or terminal degree required. Candidates should hold a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. and demonstrate a record of productive and high-quality research. Academic credentials and existing extramural grant support will determine faculty rank.
