Lateral Police Applicants: The ISEP Lateral Employment Program is an alternate selection process for applicants currently or previously employed by a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency, or a university or hospital department operated under state law, in a law enforcement capacity in which the applicant has or had the power of arrest and is or was authorized by the agency to carry a weapon.

  • Lateral applicants must meet all established pre-employment minimum standards, as well as successfully complete all testing, screening, and background screening components. (Laterals exempt from written exam/physical agility)
  • Lateral applicants must possess a Tier I Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certification or another state or federal certification accepted through the ILEA waiver requirement.
  • Lateral applicants with Indiana certification or waivers must successfully complete Recruit School and Field Training Program.

Indiana State Excise Police (ISEP) officers are fully certified and empowered to enforce any state law with a primary focus on the state’s alcohol, tobacco, and Type II gaming laws. ISEP not only undertakes traditional criminal law enforcement activities but also regulates 11,255 establishments licensed to sell alcoholic beverages, 7,494 that sell tobacco products, and 1,274 with Type II gaming.

Some typical duties of an Excise officer are listed below, but this list is not inclusive of all that Excise officers do, since assignments can often change:

  • Patrol large scale sporting events and concert venues
  • Patrol college campuses, including during sporting events and tailgating
  • Investigate citizen complaints in licensed establishments
  • Alcohol/Tobacco compliance checks
  • Determine suitability for licensure of those who apply for a permit to manufacture, transport, and sell alcoholic beverages in the State of Indiana
  • Act as liaisons between the ATC and Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies
  • Compliance and Enforcement Division
  • Criminal Investigations Division

Excise Officers are on a 15 yr. pay matrix with pre-determined annual increases. The starting recruit salary is $66,000 or $2,538 bi-weekly during the first 8 weeks while in recruit school. Lateral hires start at the probationary officer pay of $70,000 or $2,692 bi-weekly.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be at least 21 years of age to attend the Excise Police Recruit Training Academy.
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to serve in, or be assigned to, any district in the State of Indiana and the ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Must be able to pass a character, financial and background check.

Hiring Phases (Each step must be passed to proceed to the next):

  • Oral interviews: January 27, 2026- February 5, 2026
  • Conditional employment offer: Emailed by February 9, 2026
  • Background Investigations: February 16- March 20, 2026
  • Executive Staff Interviews: April 7-April 9, 2026
  • Psychological examination/Drug screen: April 20- April 24, 2026

Lateral Recruit School: June 1- July 24, 2026 (Excluding July 4 holiday) Approx. 3 weeks at the Indiana Government Center, Indianapolis. Remaining training within assigned regions/area
