Job Description

Indian River State College is seeking a passionate and student-focused Assistant Professor I in English to inspire learners through engaging and effective classroom instruction. Job Summary

The essential job functions and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Duties and responsibilities associated with teaching a minimum of 36 semester hours annually, including:
    • Developing a syllabus and schedule for each course;
    • Preparing, instructing, and grading all coursework in a timely manner;
    • Assigning final grades;
    • Holding regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
    • Maintaining course content in the College’s learning management system;
  • Teaching courses as assigned, with times and campus assignments that may change according to the needs of the department and the College;
  • Using data and assessment tools in the evaluation and improvement of instruction;
  • Implementing strategies to improve student learning, retention, and completion;
  • Working collaboratively to improve student outcomes through course development, learning assessment, and curriculum revision;
  • Serving the college community through active participation in faculty committees and/or student clubs;
  • Completing other duties and responsibilities as defined by the faculty contract and assigned by the college administration.

Qualifications, Knowledge, And Skill Requirements

The qualifications, knowledge, and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Master’s degree in English, English Education, Creative Writing or Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in English from a regionally accredited institution;
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in composition instruction;
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written;
  • Ability to work with and teach to diverse populations;
  • Ability to teach in a variety of formats including, but not limited to, in-person, online, and blended/hybrid;
  • Meeting the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
