Role Overview
Join our mission-driven legal team as a Family Law Paralegal supporting low-income individuals and families across Indian River County. This role focuses on divorce, custody, child support, domestic violence injunctions, and post-judgment matters.
Working under attorney supervision, you will manage cases, draft legal documents, coordinate court filings, and serve as a key client contact. The position requires strong organization, attention to detail, and compassionate communication with clients navigating complex family challenges, while helping advance IRLA’s mission of expanding access to justice.
Core Functional Relationships
- Clients & Families
Serve as a primary point of contact for individuals navigating family law issues; conduct intake, gather sensitive information, provide case updates, explain next steps, and offer trauma-informed support.
Attorneys & Leadership
Support family law attorneys through drafting, discovery, case preparation, and trial support, ensuring each case progresses efficiently.
Courts & Agencies
Coordinate filings, hearings, and procedural requirements with family courts, clerks, and related agencies (e.g., child support enforcement).
Grant & Program Compliance
Track case outcomes, service metrics, and required data for family law program reporting and funding compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Family Law Case Management & Client Support
Conduct intake interviews and eligibility screening with a focus on family law matters
Gather and organize client documents (financial affidavits, parenting plans, court orders, etc.)
Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files in case management systems
Communicate regularly with clients regarding case status, deadlines, and required documentation
Provide clear, compassionate guidance to clients navigating stressful family situations
Family Law Document Preparation
Draft family law pleadings and documents under attorney supervision, including:
Petitions for Dissolution of Marriage
Parenting Plans and Timesharing Agreements
Child Support Guidelines Worksheets
Motions (temporary relief, modification, enforcement, etc.)
Financial Affidavits and related disclosures
Domestic Violence Injunction paperwork
Prepare discovery requests and responses (interrogatories, requests for production)
Assemble evidence packets, exhibits, and hearing notebooks
Court & Administrative Support
File pleadings electronically through Florida e-filing portal
Track deadlines, court dates, and compliance requirements
Coordinate hearings, mediations, and case events
Prepare attorneys and clients for hearings, including document organization and logistics
Grant Compliance & Metrics Tracking
Maintain accurate records of services, outcomes, and case milestones
Enter data for reporting on family law program impact
Ensure documentation aligns with funding requirements and grant objectives
Outreach & Community Engagement
Support family law clinics, workshops, and outreach events
Provide legal information on family law rights and processes
Assist with occasional evening or weekend clinics serving working families
Preferred Qualifications
Florida Registered Paralegal (FRP) certification preferred
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or related field
Prior experience in family law strongly preferred
Familiarity with Florida family law forms and court procedures
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage sensitive information
Clear, professional, and empathetic communication style
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems (e.g., Clio, LegalServer)
Demonstrated commitment to access-to-justice initiatives
Work Environment
Full-time (40 hours/week)
In-person role with a mix of office, court, and community-based work
Occasional evening/weekend hours for outreach clinics
