Building Support Specialist I & II
Building Support Specialist I: $19.91 hourly
Building Support Specialist II: $20.90 hourly
General Description
Performs a variety of permitting related and general office functions in support of building division activities such as permits, inspections, contractor licensing, and document records. This is a clerical position, working under the general direction of the Deputy Building Official.
Building Support Specialist I: High School diploma or GED supplemented by two years of related customer service working experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
Building Support Specialist II: An associate's degree, supplemented by two years of building department or construction industry-related customer service experience or an equivalent combination of formal education and professional experience. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a role such as a building support specialist, permit technician or in a related field involving building, permitting, or construction office work.
Licenses, Certifications, Or Registrations
Building Support Specialist I:
Proficiency in interacting and communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and the public.
General understanding of building permit processes as they pertain to the role of a Permit Technician.
Excellent organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently.
Familiarity with construction documents and terminology related to the field.
Experience with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook and Word.
Competence in operating various office equipment, including personal computers, scanners, and multi-line telephones.
Proficient typing and keyboard skills, with the capability to perform data entry and utilize various computer software programs.
Ability to properly teach and convey important information about processes and policies to new employees.
Environmental Conditions
Work is performed inside an office environment.

- Receive, process, and issue various types of permits and collect fees related to such permits.
- Provide excellent customer service while interacting with high volume of customers by phone and in person
- Assists contractors, owner builders, and the public with permitting related questions/issues
- Answering phone calls and emails regarding permitting related questions
- Ability to operate various office equipment
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner via phone or email
Building Support Specialist I: High School diploma or GED supplemented by two years of related customer service working experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
