Description

Under the direct supervision of the Program Director, Performing and Visual Arts, this instructor will teach courses in Music Appreciation, Jazz History & Appreciation, Music Theory, as well as provide private Applied Music instrument lessons. This position will direct the college’s Jazz Band and instrumental music ensembles in preparation for and during public concerts, musicals, and theatrical performances. Development and directing of a new community concert band ensemble is anticipated for this position. Coordination of annual jazz festival competition for high school bands is required. Candidates should be experienced in music composition and arranging music as needed to meet the needs of each instrument ensemble. This position will actively recruit students to the music program, help manage the band scholarship budget, and work with Arts colleagues to promote arts programming throughout our region.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Music or closely related field (Music Education; Music Performance) required.
    • For consideration from a related field: minimum of 12 graduate semester credits in a combination of qualifying fields in Music that provide a foundation to the subject matter required.
  • Previous experience directing a band required, college level directing preferred.
  • Professional instrument playing experience preferred, including piano proficiency.
  • Music composition and arranging experience preferred.
  • College level teaching experience, including grading and assessment practices, preferred.
  • Experience coordinating music competitions preferred.
  • Experience planning, developing and growing music programming preferred.
  • Must relate well to students and colleagues.
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of competency within the discipline to be taught.

Work Performed

  • Teach courses in accordance with objectives of the course outline as set forth by the division using a variety of instructional methods and technologies that facilitates learning for all students.
  • Organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Develop and maintain current course syllabi/outlines for assigned courses.
  • Assist in planning and carrying out studies and surveys.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with professional personnel, local organizations, public officials and other interested people.
  • Assist in maintaining public relations with the local community and take part in community relations when possible.
  • Actively participate in program promotion and recruitment of students, provide academic advising as needed, and assist in the placement and follow up of graduates.
  • Represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community.
  • Meet all assigned classes and office commitments as scheduled.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled faculty meetings unless excused by the division dean.
  • Emphasize to students the importance of prompt and regular class attendance.
  • Measure and evaluate student progress and maintain accurate grade computations. Prepare and submit accurate grade reports as requested.
  • Submit reports on all students who may need counsel.
  • Serve actively on any committee to which appointed.
  • Keep accurate inventories of equipment and supplies and submit requisitions for needed materials.
  • Promptly report repairs needed for the classroom and equipment.
  • Stay up to date with trends in the field and update program curriculum and equipment as appropriate.
  • Assist in the program evaluation procedure.
  • Meet the standards of the college’s Quality Faculty Plan.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance at work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

3 Terms, Full Time, Benefits

Schedule:
9 hrs/day, Monday to Thursday teaching. Rehearsals/performances may be nights and weekends
