Position Summary:
The Commercial Drivers Licensed (CDL) truck or Box driver is responsible for safely operating company trucks to transport materials and products between company locations, vendors, and customers. This position ensures timely deliveries while maintaining compliance with all federal and state Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety policies.
Responsibilities:
- CDL-A Driver - operates Class A commercial vehicles in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner.
- Box Driver – operates Box trucks in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner.
- Follows trucking schedules as assigned and is generally able to maintain that day's schedule
- Maintains contact with Trucking Supervisor as needed regarding status of arrival times (at customer facility or at Index Packaging), and communicates any truck or site issues
- Assesses maintenance issues as they arise and reports issues to the Supervisor
- Loads/Unloads tractor trailers and/or box trucks when required using equipment (i.e., pallet jack, forklift)
- Reads packing slips
- Communicate effectively with dispatch and operations staff to coordinate schedules.
- Adhere to DOT Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and company-specific route schedules.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance (fueling, fluid checks, cleaning, etc.) and report service needs promptly.
- Represent the company professionally while interacting with customers, suppliers, and the public.
- Follow all safety procedures and participate in regular safety training.
- Maintain accurate driver logs, delivery documentation, and time records.
- Inspect vehicles before and after trips; report defects, accidents, or violations.
- Secure loads properly using approved methods and equipment.
- Additional duties as assigned/needed to support Woodshop Department – building and sorting pallets, cutting lumber, etc.
- When needed, supporting maintenance and cleaning grounds around site area.
Competencies and Qualifications:
- CDL-A Driver - valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) required medical card.
- Drivers must be at least 21 years old
- Ability to pass a medical examination to obtain a medical card.
- Minimum of 2 years of verifiable driving experience preferred.
- Clean driving record; no major violations within the past 3 years.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations, including HOS and load-securement standards.
- Fork truck license and operate forklifts or pallet jacks (preferred).
- Read, interpret, and follow written instructions, packing lists, route documents, and road signage.
- Must be able to communicate clearly in person and via telephone, text and/or email
- Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and DOT physical.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position requires frequent driving and regular exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions and work environments. The role involves performing manual labor as needed, including bending, squatting, and moving freely to inspect under and around trucks and trailers. Drivers must be able to operate a vehicle locally for extended periods, occasionally up to 10–12 hours in a day, with no overnight travel required. The position may require independently lifting up to 50 pounds, with team lifting used for heavier loads. The work environment includes moderate noise levels and exposure to temperature variations.
