Music Director

Independence First United Methodist is looking for a new team member to join us.

The Music Director is a key leadership position that provides vision and coordination for the music ministry of Independence First United Methodist Church. This person will help create meaningful, Christ-centered worship experiences that engage the congregation through music. The Music Director will oversee the choir, instrumentalists, and music leaders' teams, while encouraging participation from the congregation and nurturing the musical gifts of others.

Part-time position, 10 hours per week

Reports to Lead Pastor: $20-$24/hour, commensurate with experience, 2 weeks of paid vacation after 6 months.

Primary Responsibilities

Worship Leadership

• Plan, prepare, and lead music for weekly worship services, in partnership with the Pastor and worship planning team.
• Direct weekly adult choir rehearsal.
• Select music that supports the theme of worship and reflects the theological and cultural diversity of the congregation.
• Develop song leaders to encourage congregational singing with excellence and joy.
• Incorporate contemporary songs to introduce newer music to the congregation.
• Build, organize, and maintain the music library. Program Development
• Recruit, train, and encourage volunteers to participate in the music ministry.
• Organize special services (Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, etc.) and seasonal concerts/programs.
• Nurture and support children’s music ministry (or lead).
• Introduce new (contemporary) music while honoring the traditions of the church. Administration
• Maintain the music library and ensure copyright/licensing compliance.
• Oversee the care and maintenance of musical instruments and equipment.
• Collaborate with church staff on scheduling, communications, and promotion of music events.
• Manage the music ministry budget responsibly.

Qualifications

• Strong musical proficiency (vocal and instrumental) with the ability to lead others.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Experience directing choirs, ensembles, or worship teams
• A heart for ministry and a commitment to the mission of the church.
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and congregation members.
• Familiarity with a variety of worship styles (traditional hymns, contemporary praise, or blended worship).

Preferred Skills

• Proficiency with worship platforms (Planning Center)
• Degree in music, music education, worship arts, or related field.
• Ability to arrange music and/or accompany on piano, organ, or guitar.
• Ability to play organ
• Experience with audio/visual systems and worship technology.
