Job Title: Materials Engineer Location: Seattle, WA (Onsite)Duration: Long Term ContractAbout the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled Materials Engineer with expertise in adhesive characterization, bonding technologies, and soft goods material systems. In this role, you will support material development activities across wearables, accessories, and consumer devices by evaluating adhesive performance, executing test methods, and driving material selection decisions. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering, design, and supplier teams to build reliable, high-performance soft goods.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and execute adhesive test plans for soft good assemblies (lamination, pressure-sensitive adhesives, structural bonds, thermal tapes, etc.).Evaluate performance of textile, polymer, foam, and elastomer materials when combined with adhesives.Perform mechanical, environmental, and aging tests to assess durability, bonding reliability, and failure modes.Support material selection and qualification for adhesives, substrates, coatings, and flexible materials.Create test fixtures, sample preparation methods, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).Work with design and product engineering to understand material constraints, interface behavior, and impact on manufacturability.Analyze data using advanced tools (e.g., DMA, DSC, FTIR, TGA, rheology) and report actionable insights.Interface with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and labs for material sourcing and testing.Generate material documentation, including specifications, reliability reports, and risk assessments.Required QualificationsBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.3–6 years of experience in materials engineering with a focus on adhesive systems.Hands-on experience with soft goods such as textiles, foams, non-woven materials, TPU films, silicone, or leather.Strong background in adhesive testing, including peel, shear, tack, tensile, and lap-shear testing.Familiarity with thermal management adhesives, bonding to irregular substrates, and flexible assemblies.Experience in material characterization techniques: DMA, DSC, TGA, rheology, microscopy.Ability to develop custom test setups and evaluate bonding failure modes.Exceptional skills in technical reporting, experimentation design, and data analysis.Preferred QualificationsExperience working with consumer electronics or wearables.Knowledge of surface treatments, primers, and adhesion promotion.Understanding of textile manufacturing processes (lamination, coating, heat pressing, stitching).Experience with ISO/ASTM adhesive standards.Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) for soft material behavior.
