The Accounting Manager is a key leadership role responsible for elevating the Accounting & Financial operations of Impact Services. This individual will own the technical accounting of a nonprofit organization, lead the month-end close and support the audit readiness processes that enable the team to operate with excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Month-End Close

  • Own the full month-end close process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency.
  • Understand and articulate the strategic vision for a disciplined, predictable close cycle.
  • Execute the timelines, checkpoints, and deliverables established by the month-end close calendar.
  • Identify bottlenecks, determine solutions and bring it to the attention of the CFO.
  • Ensure all reconciliations and journal entries are completed with precision.

Audit Readiness & Compliance

  • Support annual audit preparation, ensuring all documentation is complete, accurate, and well-organized.
  • Build a year-round audit readiness framework, not a once-a-year scramble.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and grant requirements.
  • Anticipate auditor needs and proactively address potential issues.

Technical Nonprofit Accounting

  • Manage accounting for restricted/unrestricted funds, grants, and program allocations.
  • Oversee the trial balance and understand transactions entered into the general ledger.
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are complete and revenue/expenses accounts are accurate.

Systems, Processes & Documentation

  • Lead or support system implementations/upgrades (e.g., accounting software, reporting tools).
  • Create and maintain clear, accessible process documentation.
  • Streamline workflows to reduce manual work and improve accuracy.
  • Build a consistent rhythm for updates, decision-making, and cross-team communication.

Leadership, Communication & Collaboration

  • Model proactive communication especially when risks or delays emerge.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, clarity, and follow-through and learning.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure shared understanding of deadlines and dependencies.
  • Encourage diverse perspectives, active listening, and constructive problem-solving.
  • Coach and mentor team members, helping them grow in capability and confidence.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, humility, and a growth mindset. Knowing when to ask questions and seek support.

 

What Success Looks Like - Within the first 6–12 months, the Accounting Manager will have:

  • Established a disciplined, predictable month-end close process.
  • Year-round audit readiness structure with no surprises through effective month-end close.
  • Strengthened internal controls and documentation.
  • Improved communication rhythms across the accounting team and with leadership.
  • Identified and resolved process inefficiencies that previously slowed execution.
  • Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and strategic thinking in all areas of responsibility.
Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit accounting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.
  • Experience leading month-end close and audit processes.
  • Excellent communication skills clear, timely, and proactive.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify risks early and propose solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Experience in a growing or evolving nonprofit environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or equipment, reach with hands and arms, balance, talk or hear. The employee will occasionally climb stairs; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Able to sit at a desk working at a computer workstation keyboarding and performing routine clerical duties.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Operate related office equipment and use necessary tools.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include frequent reading and close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
