Job Description: Mental Health Support WorkerThe Mental Health Support Worker plays a key role in providing support services and case management to families involved with the Department of Social Services and Child Protective Services. The primary goal is to assist parents in strengthening their ability to offer safe, stable homes for the youth in their care, while supporting families in fulfilling the court-mandated requirements for reunification. Support services include referrals to community resources, parenting skills training, anger management, and basic life skills development.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Education, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field within Human Services.
  • Strong knowledge of the needs of adults and children with mental illnesses.
  • Clinical skills to facilitate training in daily living skills for individuals with mental illnesses.
  • Ability to work within a person-centered approach when delivering training services.
  • Proficient clinical interviewing skills, with the ability to identify clinical risk factors such as suicide, violence, and other at-risk behaviors.
  • A commitment to making a positive impact on family systems in the Tidewater community.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience in Child Welfare or Foster Care.
  • Familiarity with FAPT and court proceedings.
  • QMHP certification (but not necessary for this population)
  • Spanish Speaking (Bonus)

Duties:

  • Deliver short-term, community-based mental health services to individuals aged 5 and above within their homes and communities. These services include, but are not limited to:
  • Goal-oriented counseling interventions to individuals with significant mental illness, focusing on functional skills, daily living skills, use of community resources, and medication management to stabilize their conditions.
  • Develop and implement Individual Service Plans for clients.
  • Maintain detailed case activity records in accordance with program policies and meet agency, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Coordinate services with community providers (e.g., probation officers, teachers, mental health providers, medical support, DSS workers) to help build support networks for clients.
  • Provide 24/7 coverage with professional staff.
  • Offer intensive services based on the individual's needs, both in the home and in the community.
  • Ensure service documentation is individualized, reflecting the needs and progress of each client.
  • Collaborate with wraparound service providers and document service coordination efforts in the client record.
  • Complete daily progress notes, discharge reports, service authorization reports, incident reports, and other documentation as per agency procedures and deadlines.
  • Participate in FAPT meetings and court proceedings as required.
  • Attend weekly clinical supervision with the Clinical Supervisor and agency meetings as scheduled.

  • Capability to develop individualized, person-centered treatment plans.
  • Ability to build rapport with clients and their families.
  • Proficiency in connecting individuals with community-based resources.
  • Knowledge of clinical diagnoses and mental health disorders in both children and adults.
  • Familiarity with psychotropic medications.
  • Understanding of human rights and client confidentiality regulations.
  • Knowledge of current mental health interventions.
  • Understanding of the life cycle stages and family dynamics.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
