is a nonprofit startup studio (US 501(c)3) based in Nairobi on a mission to ensure young talented Africans have a chance at participating in the digital transformation of Africa as creators and owners.

We provide Innovation Fellowships to talented college graduates providing them the opportunity to work on well vetted ideas with like minded peers positioning them at the frontlines of the innovation economy. The vision is by 2030 to develop 10 scaled-ups, that provide 10K jobs with a combined value of $10B as a portfolio. Out of this will emerge 1000 Innovation Leaders equipped with the mindset, skills, networks and resources needed to transform our society, we call it the ‘1000 Lee Kuan Yews’.

Job Title: Director of Fundraising

Location: Nairobi, Kenya OR Austin, New York, or Silicon Valley USA

Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Fundraising to join our team. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in securing substantial financial resources from various sources. This role is vital to our organization as it directly influences our ability to catalyse the growth of the next generation of startups.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and innovative fundraising strategy, focused on creating long-term, sustainable revenue streams across diverse sources.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential investors, donors, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities.
  • Lead grant writing and application processes, coordinating with relevant internal teams to create compelling narratives and pitches.
  • Oversee the end-to-end fundraising process from prospect research and approach, through proposal development, to deal closure (except in situations where an alternate resource makes more sense)
  • Represent the organisation at external events and meetings, acting as a spokesperson and champion of our mission and vision.
  • Work with functional heads to develop and execute fundraising strategies, including the project leads.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legal and ethical standards relating to fundraising and data protection.
  • Track fundraising activities and provide regular reports to the executive team and board.
  • Manage a fundraising team (as necessary), providing guidance, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Business, Nonprofit Management, or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in a senior fundraising role, with a track record of securing significant funds from diverse sources.
  • Experience in venture capital, startup ecosystem, or related fields is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, with a proven ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing and understanding of the philanthropic landscape.
  • Existing relevant networks in the venture capital, impact investing, grant and philanthropic domains
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
