TITLE: Shipyard Production Worker

REPORTS TO: Foreman/Superintendant

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

PAY RANGE: $20.00-$21.00 per hour DOE

FT / PT STATUS: Full Time

LOCATION: Customer facilities, Shipyards- Chesapeake, VA

Summary

The Shipyard Production Worker participates in abrasive and non abrasive removal of coatings systems and paint from surfaces as directed using power and non powered hand tools; cleans work areas as needed and directed to always maintain a safe work area; participates in preparing work areas prior to work, and breakdown of set ups after work is completed. Perform duties as Fire Watch person during hot work operations to ensure safe work at all times and taking action to prevent fires during spark producing or other hot work operations. Assist in the application of new coatings systems and paint through the use of paint brushes, rollers, and other hand held equipment used during recoating of systems ready for application to surfaces. Assist in the setting up and breaking down of all equipment in use during operations in shipyard environment. Within drydocks and aboard vessels assist with or perform cleaning, housekeeping, loading materials, moving materials and supplies or equipment, setting up or breaking down containments, monitoring various equipment for proper and safe operation as trained to, and other general duties as directed. Work is primarily performed on U.S. Navy Ships and Submarines in the Shipyard Environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare job work sites and work with other team members to achieve daily team goals.
  • Assist spray painters, blasters, and other team members in pulling lines before, during, and after operations.
  • Clean tanks and other spaces as directed using methods prescribed by supervisor including manually by hand, or using other debris removal equipment such as vacuum systems.
  • Operate pneumatic, electric, and other powered and non powered hand tools.
  • Use cleaning agents, pressure washers, industrial vacuums, hoses, mops, brooms, brushes, and other cleaning equipment
  • Prepare surfaces for coating according to paint manufacturers' specifications.
  • Mix paints as directed.
  • Paint surfaces using approved methods.
  • Move materials, supplies, tools, and equipment manually or using dollies, hand trucks, carts, and other material-handling equipment.
  • Dispose of empty paint and solvent cans according to safety standards.
  • Properly store and take appropriate precautions for paint and solvents as directed by supervisor.
  • Monitor hot work operations and maintain compliance with all hot work permit requirements.
  • Keep work areas clear of combustible materials, obstacles, and other hazards.
  • Identify fire hazards and proactively respond to unsafe conditions.
  • Attempt to extinguish fires in the incipient stage using approved firefighting equipment.
  • Alert personnel and facility staff when a fire exceeds the incipient stage and requires emergency response.
  • Sort and grade materials, scrap, and salvageable items.
  • Set up equipment as directed and break down equipment as directed.
  • Clean and maintain all work areas in clean, neat, orderly fashion.
  • Clean and maintain equipment in clean, neat, and orderly fashion.
  • Remove trash and debris and collect reusable scrap materials.
  • Remove and install, as prescribed, items such as zinc anodes, lead, or other materials as prescribed.
  • Assist in the removal and installation of cables aboard vessels, follow steps as directed to ensure safe installation of cables without damaging cables.
  • Work with both hand and power tools used in basic carpentry.
  • Incidental operation of support material-handling equipment including forklifts.
  • Containment assemble/disassemble
  • May assist teams applying other applications to steel work
  • Assist Structural trades personnel during metal work, welding, or other related activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability and willingness to learn skills and trade related tasks
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of industrial environments while performing tasks.
  • Knowledge of proper use of cleaning chemicals, agents, and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and material-handling equipment.

Education And Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One (1) year of maritime, industrial, cleaning, or labor experience preferred.
  • OSHA-10 certification (company may provide).
  • Forklift certification (company may provide).
  • Firewatch certification required or obtainable through company training.
    • Shipyard Production Worker may gain exposure to other positions in the organization while working alongside and with other Trades and the experience may lead to opportunities to learn additional skills of other positions in the company such as Blasters, Brush and Roll Painters, Paint Sprayers, Paint Pump Operators, Equipment Operators & Maintenance Technnicians, Electricians, Welders, Shipfitters, Steel Workers, Carpenters, Safety Technicians, Quality Assurance Inspectors, Insulators, Machinists, Mechanics, and other specialty skills during working evolutions.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Regular exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, weather conditions, hazardous machinery, heights, confined spaces, and other industrial environments.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, twist, squat, and perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds or more (50 lbs occasionally, 25 lbs frequently, 10 lbs continuously).
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respirators, harnesses, and other safety gear as required.

  • Mops, brooms, brushes, floor-cleaning equipment.
  • Hoses, ductwork, compressed-air equipment.

  • Other industrial equipment as required.
