General Labor/Artist’s Assistant

Project Term: October 2026-January 2027

Compensation: $20-25/hour, depending on experience and skills

Project Description

We are seeking a freelance/independent contractor to provide fabrication and installation support for a series of stick sculptures being created in collaboration with artist Patrick Dougherty.

Services will primarily involve preparing natural materials and incorporating them into pre-prepared metal armatures in accordance with the project's artistic specifications. The work is hands-on and physical and will take place at the project site.

Project Services May Include

• Preparing sticks and other natural materials, including measuring, cutting to size, stripping branches and bark, and related preparation.
• Weaving and securing prepared sticks into pre-existing metal armatures.
• Performing related fabrication, material preparation, and installation services as needed for the project.
• Working from the project's design specifications and intended artistic result.
• Maintaining attention to detail and consistency in the preparation and finished installation.
• Safely using hand tools, electric pruners, and other equipment appropriate to the agreed-upon services.

Qualifications & Physical Requirements

• Previous experience with wood, natural materials, fabrication, landscaping, construction, or art installation is helpful but not required.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing for extended periods and repeatedly lifting or carrying materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
• Ability to safely work from ladders and scaffolding when required by the project.
• Comfortable working outdoors and/or in variable project-site conditions, as applicable.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to produce work consistent with project specifications.
• Ability to work cooperatively with the artist in performing the agreed-upon services.

Scheduling

The project is expected to take place between October 2026 and January 2027. Specific project dates, anticipated service periods, and assignments will be discussed and mutually agreed upon based on project requirements and contractor availability.

Daytime work is generally anticipated, with most project activity occurring approximately between 8 AM and 5 PM. Contractor may be engaged for full or partial project days depending on the services needed.

Independent Contractor Relationship

Contractor is engaged to provide specific services in connection with the project and are responsible for their own invoicing, taxes, insurance, licenses, business expenses, and other obligations applicable to their independent business. Compensation will be paid for services provided at the mutually agreed upon rate.
