What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research And Development Scientist (Hardware/Software) position at Imagen Bioworks?
Location: Houston, TX
Compensation: ~$90,000 (commensurate with experience), plus health benefits and equity
Reports to: CEO and Chief Scientific Advisor
About Imagen BioworksImagen Bioworks is building smart, autonomous microscopes that enable next-generation biological experiments. We integrate advances in AI-driven image analysis, computer vision, microscopy hardware, and wet-lab workflows to make complex imaging experiments routine and scalable—unlocking capabilities that were previously impractical or impossible.
We have secured two NIH Phase I STTR awards to expand our platform toward therapeutic applications and beyond.
Role OverviewWe are seeking a highly motivated Bioimage Analysis Specialist or Microscopy Specialist who operates comfortably at the interface of microscopy, image analysis, and software. This role will play a key part in developing and deploying automated imaging workflows and extracting quantitative insights from large-scale image datasets.
Depending on background and interests, this role may emphasize image analysis/software, microscopy/workflows, or ideally a hybrid of both.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain bioimage analysis software and pipelines
- Analyze imaging data generated by bench scientists and automated microscopes
- Design, implement, and optimize automated microscopy workflows
- Collaborate closely with bench scientists to improve imaging experiments and protocols
- Contribute to real-time, data-driven microscope control and analysis systems
- Support and maintain existing imaging and analysis infrastructure
- PhD (or equivalent experience) in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Biology, or a related field
- Strong hands-on experience with microscopy and bioimage analysis
- Demonstrated ability to work deeply at the hardware–software boundary (e.g., imaging systems analysis code)
- Experience with Python and/or MATLAB for image analysis
- Expertise in bioimage analysis tasks such as:
- Cell segmentation
- Cell tracking
- Image quantification and feature extraction
- Comfortable working with large imaging datasets and iterative experimental workflows
Ideal candidates are power users who have spent substantial time directly operating and modifying microscopes and developing or customizing analysis pipelines—not just using them peripherally.
Nice to Have- Some wet-lab experience (e.g., cell culture)
- Experience working in fast-paced startup or translational research environments
