Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a driven Communications Technician I. The person selected for this position will function as a journey-level Electronics Technician in the maintenance and operation of a 2-way radio equipment and Cable TV systems throughout the state. Essential Functions

  • Travels to adult/youth facilities to analyze electrical circuit problems in the Department's radio and close-circuit television systems.
  • Maintains and controls inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Services a variety of other electronic equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school supplemented by two (2) years of technical school with coursework in electricity, electronics, and communication systems.
  • Requires valid F.C.C. licensure or certification by an approved organization (Active Radiotelephone, First or Second-Class Operator's Licenses, while no longer issued by the F.C.C., remain applicable; Certification by the National Association of Business and Educational Radio or the Associated Public Safety Communications Officers or an equivalent approved organization is also a substitutable.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience programming radio frequencies on public safety and/or similar like communication equipment.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with various types of radio frequency programming templates.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience troubleshooting video surveillance equipment such as verifying wired/wireless connections, image quality, maintaining condition of communication cables/equipment, and power supply.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience demonstrating strong ability to present technical and high-level concepts and solutions to internal and external team members with varying degrees of technical knowledge.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience participating in the installation and routine maintenance of various types of video surveillance equipment at a public safety agency.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in troubleshooting of inhouse cable TV.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a driver's license and the ability to travel.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
