    Function / Position Summary

    The Environmental and Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing multi-disciplinary environmental health and life safety (HLS) and energy related projects across the district. This role ensures regulatory compliance, oversees environmental testing, hazard management, and the district’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Follow Board policies and industry best practices while promoting safe and energy-efficient learning environments. Function with minimal supervision and administrative independence.

    Job Duties / Responsibilities
    • Develop and maintain effective communication channels with outside groups, governmental agencies, district administrators, and staff. Serve as the district’s primary representative in communications with regulatory agencies.
    • Review and interpret newly issued regulations to ensure ongoing compliance with environmental and safety requirements.
    • Ensure full implementation of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program with compliance verified through scheduled inspections, documentation, and regulatory audits.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain compliance programs for all assigned environmental health and safety areas (asbestos, lead paint, water, hazardous materials and wastes, respiratory protection, hazardous energy lockout, confined space entry, laboratory safety, radon, indoor air quality, etc.), achieving compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
    • Manage the district’s asbestos program as the Designated Person.
    • Respond promptly to building occupant health, life and safety concerns and conduct routine environmental inspections of facilities, incorporating building team input to verify compliance.
    • Perform air monitoring and environmental testing. Prepare reports and studies with findings and recommendations.
    • Develop, manage, and update Right-to-Know programs for employees, including training, chemical inventories, and management of safety data sheets (SDS).
    • Plan, coordinate, and supervise multi-discipline or multi-vendor projects, including inspections, quality assurance, cost monitoring, and project close-out.
    • Track project performance metrics, ensuring completion within scope, schedule, and budget.
    • Maintain and oversee records of all utility usage and monitor energy markets to minimize economic impact on the district.
    • Track and analyze energy usage trends; prepare cost-benefit analyses for equipment and services.
    • Identify, implement, and manage new energy conservation measures, providing staff training as needed.
    • Assist in the procurement of services and products through the bid process and Board approval.
    • Assist in the development and monitoring of assigned budgets, ensuring funds are allocated appropriately and invoices are processed in a timely manner.
    • Coordinate in-service and professional development programs to improve compliance and safety for all Plant Operations personnel and chair the Safety Committee.
    • Respond to 24-hour emergency calls, taking appropriate action to address environmental or safety incidents.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
    • Valid Illinois driver's license.
    • Five years of related experience preferred.
    • Board certification in comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene preferred.
    • Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.

    Experience / Knowledge
    • Evidence of success in a leadership role.
    • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Illinois Department of Public Health licensing in Asbestos and Lead preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience in computer business applications.
    • Ability to plan and schedule activities on multiple sites.
    • Working knowledge of school operations as related to health and life safety.
    • Knowledge of planning, scheduling, budgeting, bidding, and contracts.

    Physical Demands
    • Ability to work on a computer for a major portion of the day.
    • May be required to lift, carry, and transport materials up to 30 lbs. with proper technique.
    • Travel within the district and surrounding communities is a requirement.

    Terms of Employment

    This is a 12-month position.
    Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education. The salary range for this position is $85,602.00 - $128,410.00. Our typical practice is to hire in between the minimum and midpoint ($106,999.00).
