Position Overview
The Stationary Engineer position operates, administers, and maintains the Power Plant at East Moline Correctional Center. This individual will also operate, administer, and maintain the facility's HVAC equipment, assist the Stationary Engineer-Chief with reports, conduct rounds of Power Plant at regular intervals, and serve as a lead worker. In addition, they will supervise, direct and evaluate work assignments of individuals in custody workers, schedule Power Plant shutdowns necessary to make repairs, contact vendors to receive price quotes and submit purchase requests to immediate supervisor for approval. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, task oriented, and organized. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.
Essential Functions
- Operates, administers, and maintains the Power Plant at East Moline Correctional Center.
- Operates, administers, and maintains the facility’s Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
- Assists Stationary Engineer- Chief by preparing necessary mechanical, boiler, and water reports needed by Capital Programs Unit, Illinois Water Survey, and other State Agencies.
- Conducts rounds of Power Plant at regular intervals.
- Serves as a lead worker.
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates work assignments of individual in custody workers assigned to the Power Plant.
- Schedules Power Plant shutdowns necessary to make repairs to ensure maximum operation and least possible emergency situations.
- Contacts vendors to receive price quotes and submits purchase requests to immediate supervisor for approval.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.
- Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers a candidate with a certification as a Universal Technician under U.S. E.P.A. Section 608 Rules and/or passed all three EPA Section 608 Technician Certification Types (I, II and III).
- Prefers at least four (4) years of experience operating high-pressure steam boilers.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining steam plant auxiliaries.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining ion exchange resin water softening equipment.
- Prefers at least four (4) years of knowledge of and experience with electro-pneumatic and air handling controls.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of field experience in the programming and function of variable frequency drives.
- Prefers four (4) years of experience in routine/preventive maintenance on pumps, boilers, compressors, water heaters, valves, electronic and pneumatic controls.
- Prefers four (4) years of experience in the operation of and routine/preventive maintenance of boiler feed water treatment systems.
- Prefers four (4) years of experience maintaining daily logs on boiler operation, boiler water treatment, boiler water testing, generator operation, and state water surveys.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of emergency power generation using a diesel generator.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the possession of or acquisition of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S. E.P.A. Section 608 Rules within 12 months of hire.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
