Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to independently perform detailed engineering surveys, review assessments and assists in performing technical review, planning, and directing the enforcement of laws and regulations to provide safe and sanitary conditions for swimming pools, recreation areas, and bathing beaches. Conducts non-routine investigations in response to complaints, contamination or illness.

Essential Functions

  • Under immediate supervision of the Program Manager, receives formal training on how to evaluate complex engineering plans associated with swimming facilities and bathing beaches.
  • Prepares detailed technical reports of assessment, inspections, and investigations for supervisory review.
  • Assists with review of licensure applications.
  • Participates in conferences with regulated entities and the general public explaining statutory requirements and regulatory compliance.
  • Attends and completes mandatory knowledge-based and practical training required by the Office of Health Protection standard operating procedures and program requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years college with a bachelor's degree in engineering and coursework in sanitary, public health or environmental engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six months of experience conducting detailed on-site professional environmental engineering investigations and studies for general engineering program activities.
  • Six months of experience preparing detailed technical engineering reports on investigation findings, sample reports or corrective action.
  • Six months of experience performing reviews of licensure applications.
  • Six months of experience in environmental field sampling equipment and chemical and bacteriological testing techniques.
  • Six months of experience responding to routine public inquiries by phone, email or mail regarding regulations, requirements and policies of the program.
  • Six months of work experience using Microsoft software products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

  • Requires use of personal vehicle for extensive work-related travel within the State.
