Reporting to the School Director, the care team - Transportation driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students over scheduled routes for school-related purposes. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students during transport.
Vehicle Operation:
Operates a multi-passenger school vehicle in a safe and efficient manner on designated routes and schedules.
- Complies with all California vehicle codes, traffic laws, and district policies and procedures for transportation.
Maintains awareness of road, weather, and traffic conditions to ensure passenger safety.
Student Safety and Management:
Ensures all students are safely seated and secured with seatbelts or other safety restraints as required by law and policy.
- Maintains order in the vehicle to create a safe transportation environment.
- Reports student conduct issues to the appropriate school administrator using established procedures.
- Provides assistance to students while boarding and disembarking the vehicle.
Performs a thorough vehicle check after each route to ensure no students remain on the van.
Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance:
Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip safety and maintenance inspections of the vehicle.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the vehicle's interior and exterior.
- Promptly reports any mechanical defects, malfunctions, or damages to the Transportation Supervisor.
Maintains accurate and up-to-date records, including mileage logs, fuel consumption records, and inspection reports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Communicating with others to exchange information. (In Person/Telephone/Computer)
- Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
- Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions.
- When needed to support a school or education program, must have the ability to travel by public transit as well as operate a vehicle for self-transportation purposes between worksites.
- Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
- May encounter outdoor elements: high (>90)/low (<60) temperatures, precipitation and/or wind.
- Ability to work in situations involving the need to make informed and quick decisions.
- Ability to supervise/manage workers and delegate as needed in project management situations.
- Reading detailed documentation and analyzing data sets.
- Writing professionally, both by hand and utilizing computer software.
- Speaking in public settings, including making public presentations to large and small groups.
- Dealing and navigating professionally through high-stress situations.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING (QUALIFICATIONS)
Education and Experience:- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of licensed driving experience. Prior experience transporting children is preferred.
- Licensing and Certification:
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License (e.g., Class C), including passenger endorsement.
- Certificate Copy (California Youth Bus Certificate issued by the DMV (must be attached at time of application)
- A clean driving record as verified by a DMV printout - Current within 30 days. (Must be attached at time of application)
- CPR/First Aid Certification (Must be attached at time of application)
- Medical Examination
- Required Clearances and Drug and Alcohol Testing:
- Must receive clearance from a comprehensive background check, including DOJ and FBI fingerprinting.
- Pre-employment testing (before you can begin driving).
- Random testing (throughout employment).
- Post-accident testing (if certain conditions are met).
- Reasonable suspicion testing (if supervisors suspect use).
- Return-to-duty and follow-up testing (after a violation).
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of California traffic laws and defensive driving techniques.
- Skill in operating a multi-passenger van safely.
- Ability to work effectively with children and manage student behavior.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to read maps.
- Ability to work a split-shift schedule and maintain punctuality.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
Working experience in a school environment is preferred.
