Position Summary
The K–8 School Counselor provides a comprehensive counseling program that supports students' academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide individual and small-group counseling to students experiencing academic, behavioral, social, or emotional challenges.
Deliver classroom lessons focused on social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, self-regulation, character development, and positive peer relationships.
Support students in developing coping skills, problem-solving strategies, and healthy decision-making practices.
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address student needs.
Participate in Student Study Team (SST), Section 504, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as appropriate.
Conduct risk assessments and provide crisis intervention services in accordance with school policies and procedures.
Coordinate referrals to community agencies and mental health providers when additional support is needed.
Support attendance improvement efforts and interventions for students experiencing chronic absenteeism.
Consult and collaborate with parents and guardians regarding student academic, behavioral, attendance, and social-emotional concerns.
Assist with the development and implementation of school-wide programs that promote a positive school climate, student wellness, and restorative practices.
Analyze student data to identify trends and recommend interventions that support student success.
Maintain confidential student records and documentation in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Participate in professional development activities and remain current on counseling best practices and educational trends.
Qualifications
Master's Degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Valid California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling required.
Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students preferred.
Knowledge of child and adolescent development, social-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, and behavior intervention strategies.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong counseling, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
Knowledge of MTSS, restorative practices, and student support systems.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Strong organizational and case management skills.
Proficiency with educational technology and student information systems.
Working Conditions
School-based setting serving students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Frequent interaction with students, families, staff, and community partners.
Occasional participation in after-school meetings, family engagement events, and school activities.
Perferred Certification: Valid California PPS Credential in School Counseling.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a diverse K–8 school setting and bilingual proficiency in English and Somali, Spanish, or another language represented within the school community.
