Job Summary: The Robot Welder II is an intermediate skilled position performing a variety of welding and related tasks (e.g., cutting) using gas and/or electric welding equipment.  The Robot Welder II may be required to assist in the training and development of new/less skilled employees. The Robot Welder II receives specific work assignments under limited supervision and resolves problems with limited assistance from the Lead/Supervisor.  The Robot Welder II work involves considerable skill and is subject to final inspection and test.  Errors in welding are not always readily apparent and may result in excess labor and material costs.  The Robot Welder II is expected to practice and adhere to the department’s 6-S standards and the Company’s Six Sigma principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following with other duties assigned as necessary:

  • Reviews job orders (written or verbal) and interprets welding specifications according to code certifications, alignment, dimensional and general inspection requirements.
  • Sets up jobs, fits, and positions weldments using fixtures, jigs, etc., and various welding techniques, materials and equipment within recognized limits or procedures.
  • Performs welding and related tasks such as surface preparation, thermal cutting, grinding, etc.
  • Perform Robot welding
    • Perform daily safety inspections.
    • Set-up appropriate fixtures.
    • Ensure part is with program permitters.
    • Maintain Touch-Sence Programming.
    • Unload finished parts.
    • Perform manual Finish Welding.
    • Finish Grinding and cleaning of all splatter prior to the test Op.
  • Inspect welds and welded surfaces for proper bonds.
  • Cleans and maintains work area (daily), welding equipment and other tools of the trade.
  • Always works in a safe manner and always wears all the required PPE.
  • Ensures that all work is done in accordance with and adheres to IEA’s ISO and Quality standards.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be provided for individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties.
  • Assist when needed to help train less skilled employees in the department and/or company.
  • Perform other duties, reasonable requests and/or operate other machinery as assigned by the lead/supervisor/manager for the best interests of the department and or company.                                                                                                              

Physical Demands:

  • Maximum lifting requirement (pounds): 50 (infrequently), 25 (frequently).
  • Maximum moving requirement (pounds): 100.
  • Maintaining physical condition necessary for the following: Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, and twisting upper body; occasional climbing or sitting.
  • Working at heights off the ground up to 10 feet.
  • Vision requirements: Close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception.

Work Environment:

  • Work location: Welding shop, metal fabrication/assembly shop.
  • Exposure to: Hot objects (burns), glare (flashing), sparks and flying objects (metal chips and scale), fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical equipment.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirement: safety glasses, safety shoes, flame-resistant overclothing and gloves, face shield when grinding, and ear protection when using air tools.
Qualifications:

Position Requirements:

  • Key skills, abilities, and knowledge: 
    • Working knowledge of standard welding principles and techniques.
    • Ability to read and understand weld specs, shop drawings, job layouts and blueprints.
    • Ability to use basic math, measuring instruments (rules, etc.), gauges and templates.  
    • Knowledge of Robotic Welding Equipment.
    • Knowledge of working properties of structural metals and welding materials.
    • Skill in using and maintaining welding equipment and related tools of the trade.
    • Knowledge of occupational hazards and the ability to follow safe work practices.
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with others.
  • Experiential:  Two or more years of general welding experience is desirable.
    • Robotic Welding: Minimum of One year of robotic welding experience, or completion of a vocational school certification program related to robotic welding.
  • Educational: Formal apprenticeship training is desirable but not essential.
  • Certificates, Licenses: Forklift operator certification is preferred.
